Happen Again ,
Our pride has been hurt by a
town to the west.
Abilene softball combinations
have mowed down the beat Dallas
had to offer, the elite of Fort
Worth, San Angelo’s top machine,
Sweetwater, Breckenridge. Every-
thing in sight has bitten the dust
of the charges of T. J. Bailey and
Charley Ivey—everything but Big
Spring.
And W D. Berry's Standard Oil-
ers have socked the locals twice.
I “We knew it was an accident the
j first time," a Sportsman club big-
Iwig remarked recently. “And we be-
lieve it was the last time," he con-
tinued.
All of Abilene’s fandom knew
that the siege guns of the Bailey
attack would bombard Bobbye Sav-}
age and his fast ball from the hill
upon the Big Springers' final visit.
But Bobbye left them gasping for
breath, turning in a neat three hit
job to decision the locals, 2 to 1.
The surprising Savage, how-
ever, uncorked an even more im-
pressive performance at San An-
| gelo Saturday night, beating Find-
laters of the Concho river town, 5
to 4 The game lasted 17 innings
and Savage went the route. It was
an achievement not to be snickered
Savage’s fame has spread past a
few West Texas counties. He is in
demand wherever softball is play-
ed in Texas. Not many days ago
the Braniff Airliners imported him ,
for a game with an Oklahoma City
‘10.’ He made the trip and came
through with a victory. El Paso
called for him recently and again
he won.
Abilene softballers tell us that
Wednesday night when he faces
a picked group of local fast lea-
guers at Sportsman field he won’t
come through. They are determined ,
to break the spell which young Mr
Savage holds over them.
Billy Wood will be gunning for
victory. The enmity of the clubs of
rival cities has grown bitter. And
fans who like their ’softball will
see a show A good number should
be on hand: ,..

PHILADELPHIA. July 30—P)—
Hugh Mulcaby isn’t superstitious
so it’s not "jinxing" the tall right-
hander to say that he may be the
1 first 20-game winner the Phillies
have had in 24 years ‘
"Big Mul" won his nth game
against Cincinnati on Saturday and
all hands from President Gerry
Nugent and Manager Doc Prothro
down agree he has an excellent
chance of reaching the coveted
20-game mark.
