Throughout the questioning, the

nervously.
"He has become a chain smoker,
lighting one cigaret from another,"
the investigator declared.
Lonergan clung steadfastly to
his story during the question-

no part in the slaying of hla
wife.

The comely Mrs. Lonergan, heir

Losses Under
Five Percen
WASHINGTON, Oct. 27.—
(UP) — Despite heavy losses
in some raids, American air-
plane losses in the European
theater have averaged less
than five percent on each
mission, Secretary of War
Henry L. Stimson said today.
ALL OPERATIONS COVERED
The figure of less than five per
cent losses. Stimson told a press
conference, covers all American
fighter and bomber operations since
the Eighth air force went into ac-
tion in 1942.
British losses also are running
below five percent on an over-all
basis, he said.
Stimson sale a final evaluation of
enemy losses in the Oct. 14 raid on
Schweinfurt, in which the Ameri-
cans lost So heavy bombers, indi-
cated 186 enemy fighter planes were
destroyed and 27 others probably
destroyed.
"The question naturally
arises: can we afford such
heavy losses as incurred on the
Sihweinfurt raid?" Stimson said.
“They are countered by light
losses on other operations."
He cited, for example, a raid car-
ried out by 501 American planes re-
sently on air fields of northern
France, which inflicted heavy dam-
age without the loss of a single
American plane.
