WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 — ()-
Republicans today picked the first
four issues on which they hope to
win control of Congress next year-
topped by a contention that the ad-
ministration has "fumbled" recon-
version.
The other three—laid down by
Chairman Herbert Brownell Jr., of
the Republican national committee

Lion's Speaker
Lt. Davis Scarborough, young
Abilene attorney who is on leave
after long Navy service in South
America, will address the Lions

luncheon.

Texas State Guard will be master
after a cross country swing—are:
I. The people are “skeptical
about promises made by the
Truman administration to bring
about economy in the federal
government."
2—The public is convinced that
it is tune to "audit" the New Deal
and it is "turning to the Republican
party as the logical and indeed the
only available, agency to conduct
that audit."
3—Some New Deal adherents are
trying to "capitalize for partisan
purposes the patriotism of the mil-
lions of men and women now re-
turning from duty in the armed ser-
vices."
Brownell asserted that Demo-
cratic Gov. Mon C. Wallgren of
Washington, a close friend of Presi-
dent Truman has served notice on
Republican veterans that they need
not apply for state jobs.
Brownell said the trip convinced
him that the Republicans "will un-
doubtedly win control of Congress
in 1946 " Whether he meant the
of ceremonies. He commands the Senate as well as the House he did

Using the term "New Deal” often,
and including the Truman admin-
istration in that term, Brownell
said.

Drink and Steak
Bring $10 Fine
A tough steak and too much of
drink resulted in a $10 fine ass-
essed in corporation court this
morning by Judge Ben L. Cox after
a witness had been put on the stand
to tell the story.
The witness said the man asked
for a sharp knife to cut the steak,
and then threatened to force his
way into the kitchen to tell the
cook how the meat should have been
prepared.
Three other fines for similar
charges were assessed.

"I found considerable dis-
satisfaction with the manner in
which the New Deal has fumbl-
ed the ball in the matter of
making preparations for a quick
reconversion from a war time
to a peace time economy. x x X
Apparently the sudden collapse
of Japan was as much of a sur-
prise to the New Deal high
command as it was to many
millions of citizens."
The GOP chairman said he found
a "general disposition to be skep-
tical" about economy pledges by the
Truman administration. He added
that the people apparently have
been reading reports of the Byrd
joint congressional economy com-
mittee. One of these reports re-
cently listed a net increase of 16,-
000 of federal civilian employees in
June over May.
