Houston.—Mrs. Lillian Johnson,
cashier and staff writer for The
Houston Informer and Texas Free-
man, had a birthday last Tuesday. In
her modest way she tried to keep the
information from her associates, but
this was impossible. It was even
found out what birthday it was, but
this information is not being divulged.
Mrs. Johnson’s column, “Reviews
and Comments,” appearing each week
on the editorial page of The Informer
and Freeman, is one of the best of its
kind in any Negro newspaper, and
The Informer and Freeman staff Is
always glad to give her credit for
writing the best news stories from
week to week.
In addition to being a writer of no
mean ability and handling the money
of The Informer and Freeman with
care and accuracy, Mrs. Johnson is
one of the best stenographers in the
entire South. Besides all this, she is
a pleasant personality.

THIRD WARD HOME
Houston, Texas, June 17, 1933.
To Whom It May Concern:
This is to ceritfy that my mother,
Mrs. Annie Byers, joined tae Safe-
guard Burial Benefit Life Insurance
Company May 23, 1982, and died June
14, 1988, and immediately upon noti-
lying the company of the death of my
mother, Mrs. Annie Byers, Horace
Pope, Sr., president of the company,
placed into my hands a check for the
full amount of $111 due me on the
policy carried with the concern. In
fact, I received my money from the
company sooner than I expected, even
before I had time to get the death
proof papers completed Horace G.
Pope, president of the Safeguard Life
Insurance Company, appeared at my
home with the check and offered ass
his assistance in getting the papers
completed that I may not be delayed
in getting my check for the full
amount due me before the funeral so
I could make all necessary prepara-
tions. In fact, the quick dispatch in
which the Safeguard Insurance Com-
pany paid me the full amount due me
was in advance of all other concerns
| and the promptness was a unique ex-
perience to me in getting death claims
paid.
I am so impressed with the service
rendered me in this matter by the
Safeguard Life Insurance Company
that I shall continue to cany the oth-

shall use my influence among my
friends that they, too, may become
members of the Safeguard Insurance

splendid service on this particular oc-
casion when service was most needed.
In fact, Mr. Pope explained to me
while paying me my claim that in
spite of the depression and business
reverses throughout the country with
so many different classes of business
yet in spite of this fact the Safeguard
Life Insurance Company has adopted
a “Pay You Now” policy that its
policyholders may get service when
service is most needed.
And, too, it gives me great pleasure
to issue this statement in the interest
of one of our own race institutions
that is really rendering service to its
policyholders in the prompt payment
of all legal claims, notwithstanding
the fact that there are a number of
my friends and acquaintances, some
of whom are in business and are de-
pendent upon members of their own
race for the bulk of their support, and
yet I hear and read of them boost-
ing and lauding concerns of other
races and some have even attempted
to criticize and discourage me for
giving my support to our own race
concerns. In view of thia fact, noth-
ing gives me greater joy than to have
our own race concerns prove them-
selves in the face of criticism and op-
position as the Safeguard Insurance
Company has done with me on this
special and needed occasion.
