two story apartment at 2407 Gray,
was badly damaged when the oc-
cupant, Mrs. Sue Moses, left the
apartment and went next door for
a few moments. The gas heater had
been left on in the apartment and
before the fire was discovered the
entire second floor was a mass of
flames. A second alarm was sounded
within three minutes and six pump-
er crows finally checked the blaze
after a hard fight. Mrs. Mary Jones,
who lived downstairs had little fire
damage, but smoke and water loss
was very heavy. The beauty parlor
and apartment occupied by Miss
Gertrude Payne, 2403 Gray, was
damaged from fire, smoke and wa-
ter.
Friday, December 7, the roof on
the home of Miss Clara Jackson,
3119 Stonewall, was slightly dem-
aged when sparks from the flue
fell on the house.
Saturday, December 8, the home
of Jake Night, 2010 Chew, was
slightly damaged when kerosene ig-
nited the porch of the house. The
fire marshall is questioning a man
in regard to the cause of the fire.
Monday, December 10, the resi-
dence of Arthur Harris, 3202 New
Orleans, and the grocery store of
S L. Howard, 1702 Brewster, were
badly damaged when the kerosene
stove in a small adjoining room ex-
ploded. The fire had gained consid-
erable headway before equipment
reached the scene. Both buildings
were owned by C. J. Bonne and
covered by insurance.
Monday, December 10, the bed-
room in the home of Ulish Curl was
damaged when the kerosene lamp
exploded shortly before midnight.
Damage was confined in the • one
room. This fire occured at 2005
Massie.
Tuesday, December 11, the home
of Willie King, 3107 McGowan, was
almost destroyed when a cigarette
ignited a chair in the bedroom. The
fire had gained considerable head-
way before being discovered. Fire-
men were hard pressed in saving
adjoining property.
Tuesday, December 11, the clinic
located at 3262 Holman, was slight-
ly damaged when the porter used an
oily mop to clean the face of a small
her.ter in the reception room. The
quick arrival of the department plus
the fact that a garden hose was
handy prevented a very serious fire
loss in the building.
With the cold winter months that
lay ahead, won’t you be more care-
fvl with your heater and stove?
Many fires that occur each week
can be prevented. Never leave a
stevo burning in the house when
you go, out Several very serious
losses have been traced to stoves
that have been left burning when
the occupant was not home. Ride
with your Fire Department Com-
mertator every Saturday night. Ra-
