Private First Class Willie J. Till-
man is home on a forty-five day
furlough visiting with his wife and
infant son, Carlos Aundre. Mrs.
Tillman is the former Betty Jewell
Clinton. Private Tillman expects to
be discharged some time after the
first, of the year. He is now sta-
tioned at Tampa, Florida.
Sergeant John E. Semede, who
has served in the U. 8. army for
the past three years or more, and
last stationed at Muroc, Calif., re-
ceived an honorable discharge last
week.

has returned to Fort Sam Houston
in San Antonio, after spending a

and hopes to return soon with a
discharge.
Mr. and Mrs. Felix Adams, 608
East 39th street, are celebrating
their 21th wedding anniversary
Saturday, December 15. They
have resided in Houston 23 years
and are the parents of ten chil-
dren. They also have two grand-
children.
Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Maxey, Sr.,

looking for their three sons home
for Christmas. Their sons are: Lt.
U. S. Maxey, Jr., overseas; Sgt.
John D. Maxey, radio and teletype
operator, 93rd Signal co., overseas,
and their 17-year-old son, James
L. Maxey, freshman in Tuskegee.

Given Discharge
Cpl. Earl Egland, who spent more
than three years in the South Pa-
cific, has been honorably discharged
and is at home with his wife, Mrs.
Dorothy Egland, and daughter, Sha-
ran Ann. He was graciously enter-
tained with a supper recently by
his parents and friends.
Lois Barbara Jean Jackson, Har-
per High school student, was award-
ed first place recently in the Health
Scrap Book contest conducted in
city colored schools by the Hous-
ton Anti-Tubeuculosis league.
The league has served Houston
and Harris county for 33 years.
Lois Barbara Jean is a member of
the High 6th grade class, Mrs. Floyd
Ford, teacher.

Steward 2-e T. w. Coleman Jr. of
the U. S. Navy has returned to
his base at Bainsbridge, Maryland,
after having spent a six-day leave
with his wife, Mrs. Mareelyn Cole
man, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
T.,W. Coleman Sr. of 3418 Cobb
street.
During his leave std. Coleman
was the recipient of many social
courtesies, extended him by friends
and relatives.
U S Maxey Heads
Telephone Union
The Southwestern Telephone
Workers Union held their banquet
and election of officers recently in
the YWCA assembly room. Offi-
cers were re-elected as follows:
U. 8. Maxey, Sr., chairman; Nolan
Moody, vice chairman; Walter Moody,
treasurer, and Mrs. Katie Joshue,
secretary.
After all reports the chairman
paid tribute to the following mem-
bers who served overseas: Capt.
David L. Truscott, Cpl. George Fra-
sier, Cpl. Julus Allen and Seaman
First Class L. Johnson. Willie Thom-
as responded for the servicemen.
On the committee were: James Car-
ter, C. C. Charles, Mrs. Addle Far.
ris. Noris Davis and Mrs. Katie
Joshue.
Mr. Maxey will attend the State
convention, which will convene Jan-
uary 24-28 in Dallas at the Baker
Hotel. .

At Home Of
M-s. Mayham
The Beauty Shop Owner’s League
met last week at the home of Mrs.
Albertha Mayham, 3405 Chartres.
The meeting was presided over by
the president, Mrs. G. A. Godfrey.
Devotions were given by the chap-
lain, Mrs. Amanda Chase. Business
was discussed and a short paper
was read by the president on be-
nevolence in the league.
After meeting adjourned, the host-
ess served a very delicious luncheon
to the club on a table covered with
a beautiful lace table cloth. After
this, the members went over to
see another one of their members.
Victory Chapter No. 1 entertained
with a cocktail party Sunday from
4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Daughters
of Elks Rest, for the benefit of the
disabled veterans of McCloskey hos-
pital, located in Temple, Texas.

While in school Miss Braden served
as secretary to the president for two
years. She now teaches at B. F.
Darrell school, Dallas, Texas. Miss
Braden’s escort, Mr. Brover Wash-
ington, is a graduate of Samuel Hus-
ton college, and a member of Alpha
Put Alpha Fraternity.
Miss Deborah Lucille Bedford, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis
Bedford, is a graduate of Prairie
View college and an evening hos-
iers at the YWCA. Her escort is
William Wakefield, a student of U.
C. L. A.
Miss Rachel Holloway is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hollo-
way at 3510 State street. Miss Hollo-
way is a ‘44 graduate of Bishop
college, Marshall, Texas, where she
was typist in the office of the pres-
ident until she completed her col-
lege work.
After finishing Bishop Miss Hol-
loway worked as typist with the
V-12 unit of training of the Navy
Department out at Southern Metho-
dist University. She was transfer-
red from the V-12 Unit Training at
Southern Methodist University to
the Civil Service Commission as
typist, being the first Negro to
serve as typist at the Civil Service
Commission. Later she was trans-
ferred to Washington, D. C., to work
in the Bureau of Ships of the Navy
Department, where she resided for
six months.
At present, Miss Holloway is a
teacher at the N. W. Harlee Ele-
mentary school.
Miss Dorothy Elliott, daughter of
Mrs. S. ’B. Elliott, recently gradua-
ted from Clark College, Atlanta,
C.. with high honors. She is a mem-
ber of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
ano past Basileus of her chapter.

son, is a graduate of Bishop Col-
lege and a member of the Alpha

Hold Meet
The Ladies Auxiliary and the
Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Por-
ters had a joint meeting last Fri-
day evening at the home of Mrs.
Rose Marshall, 4706 Orange atreet.
The meeting was opened with a
song and a prayer with Lorenza
Davis, vice president of the Broth-
erhood, and Mrs. Dona Jenkins, vice
president for the Auxiliary, presid-
ing. Topic of the evening was the
cabaret dance which was given
on December «, at the city audi-
torium. A report was made by Mrs.
Ethel White, secretary of the en-
ter tainment committee; communi-
cations were read by Mrs. Mary
Gibson.
The meeting closed in the usual
manner, after which a delicious tur-
key dinner was served by the hos-
tess, Mrs. Marshall. The next meet-
ing was held on December 13
