He Also Smokes
A Pipe And Eats
Besides being a congressman
and a preacher, Dr. Adam Clayton
Powell alto smokes a pipe and
cats. Mrs. Mattie Reese made this
discovery when after an address
the congressman-minister made
Sunday, March 4, at the Wheatley
High school, he was spirited away
to the home of the Reeses for din-
ner.
Mrs. Reese had not anticipated
such a possibility so Mr. Powell
had to cat what she had. She states
that the congressman was very co-
operative. He seemed to sense her
nervousness, she said, because
when they arrived at 1209 Bayou
street, the home of the Reeses,
the congressman proceeded to
make himself at home by first
lighting his pipe and then placing
one foot upon a stool and a leg a-
cross the arm of a chair.
He further demonstrated his
willingness to be considered a man
by going into the kitchen where
Mrs. Reese was preparing his food
and inquiring if there were coffee.
Peeping under a covered dish on
the table to see what was there he
remarked that he had "to call
Hazel." Seating himself in the kit-
chen while Mrs. Reese prepar-
ing the cats, the recent bridegroom
boasted that he was going to be a
dandy soon, in fact he had been
in the process for the past six
months, he revealed to his hostess

with:
"I don't see any pajamas on the

HOUSTON.— Under the leader-
ship of our sponsor, J. R Cunning-
ham, James Walls, president of the
senior Hi-Y, John Crouch, Jr., vice,
Harold Boyd and L. V. Culbertson,
president of the Junior Hi-Y, John
Codwell, Jr., vice, and Hamah King,
secretary, our school activities has
progressed.
In January of 1945 the YMCA of
Wheatley organized the clean speech
committee. It was the duty of these
boys to erase from the walls of our
school at various places, writing
that were not to be expected from
high school students. On Decem-
ber 7, 1945, a large delegation of
boys left from our school for Pra-
irie View university. Prairie View,
Texas, for a YMCA conference.
Upon our return we brought a
report January 11. This report re-
emphasized the topic “Youth, What
Now.” In the report it was pointed
out that youth of today wants
equality. This means that youth
wants equal rights and equal op-
portunity.
It was said that since the boys
and girls of today will be the men
and women- of tomorrow, they must
be trained today to cooperate. Con-
tributions were made by James
Walls, who gave the occasion, Jo-
seph Raibon, who spoke of co-ed
activities, John Cartwright, Haden
Walker and Hamah King who spoke
on Faith and a Symposium by L. V.
Culbertson, and John Codwell, Jr.
Remarks were made by J. R.
Cunningham, T. L. Lampley and
Principal J. E. Codwell.’ In the year
of 1945 our YMCA basketball team
won the city ‘Y championship,' and
was the first largest in the city to
win Father and Son banquet cup,
which we so highly cherish.
On March S. 194G, the Senior
YMCA of Phillis Wheatley defeated
the Senior YMCA of Jack Yates

Saturday to explore the southwest
end of 2400 acre Camp Strake.
This expedition requires such in-

why. Take a gander. Top, center is that man, Host C. A. (That

dancing trios, the mellow Mosetti Trio, Myrtle Forune, Lucy Bat-
