h|G DAY AT WILTON. i
—
TWO CANDIDATES FOR GOVERN-
OR ON THE ROSTRUM.
An Immense Crowd Present to Take
in the Speaking and
Barbecue.
Arkansas Gazette Correspondence.
Wilton. Auk.. August 13. —For a
half mile on each side the railroad
track was lined with enthusiastic ad-
mirers of Col. Fishback as the party
reached Wilton to-day. Excursions
were run over the railroads and each
incoming train was crowded so that
people were banging on the steps.
Men women and children rode horse-
back for miles to the speaking. The
Gubernatorial candidates visited Lit-
tle River for tlie first time in the his-
tory of the county and such a gather-
ing of people was never before seen
here.
Tli'-re was one solid mass of people
covering live acres. The Sebastian
County statesman and the Washing-
ton striker were put in a wagon aud
headed by a baud driven to the
grounds where n grand barbecue was
given under the auspices of the Dem-
ocratic club. Col. Fishback was loud-
ly cheered as he mounted the ros-
trum.
The speaking took place in a grove
where seats aud a stand for (be speak-
ers had been arranged. An address i
of welcome was delivered by Prof.
Hill master of ceremonies after
which
THAT (IHAVE AI'OSTLE
of the. People’s party was presented
amid profound silence. Amongother
things lie said was: "It is said that
iron sharpens iron so Ihc face of man
sharpens his fellow man. I am glad
to be before you in person so that you
will not know me only through the
degraded partisan press which lias
represented me as conniving with that
old Republican party. I want to put
the lie on that press which is edited
by two old renegade Republicans.
That Democratic-Republican combina-
tion in its insane foolish attempt has
represented me as conniving witli the
Republican party.” ['‘Amen'' said a
colored brother just behind the stand.
The Professor delivered about his
usual speech condemning mob law 1
denouncing the present election sys-'
tern I’enitentiary lease system and
denouncing tlie Democratic adminis-
tration in general the Treasury not'
excepted.
He also took up National issues mid :
"talked” currency railroads tlie alien '
land ownership and the tariff. T here
were some few of the People’s party ■
present and they said “that’s right” to
each and every one of his declarations
which seemed to enthuse Mr. Ctirna-1
han. He fold scores of ancient jokes
aud struck his hands together so hard
that several people assailed their nos-
trils. The Texarkana band was on
hand and furnished excellent music.
col. fishback’h reception.
As Col. Fishback arose hats were
thrown into the air men hallo ved and
women waved their handkerchiefs.
For ten minutes the speaker was
not able to say a word. The woods
rang as if a dozen steam engines were
screaming "Fishback.”
Men even climbed upon each oth-
thcr’s shoulders so anxious were they
to see the champion.
He said he would not >e able to
cover all the ground Mr. Carnahan
had gone over but must leave a groat
deal to their own intelligence. Mr.
Carnahan had said the present elec-
tion system was a greater cost to both
the State and candidate lie had in-
quired of the Secretary of State and
ho said it was at a less cost to the
State. If Mr. ( Tirnahan had read (he
Democratic National platform under-
standingly he would know that
meant that the country must return
to Democracy. The speaker consum-
ed the greater part of his time dis-
cussing tlie tariff
He produced statistics which showed
a decrease of wealth in agricultural
States and nn increase in the iiianii-
fneturing States. He made nn unusu-
ally strong speech and iiinde the tariff
so plain Hint even the small boy mid
the uucdiicated negro could under-
stand it. The speaker was applauded
heartily all the way through. When
he had finished the people rushed to
the platform wild to shake the hand
of their gallant lender.
What few of the People's party
were present were very enthusiastic.
After the speaking dinner was mi-
noiiiieed. nml u special table had been
provided for Gov. FLshbaek mid the
third party man.

| At each station returning three rous-
ting cheers were given for Col. Fish-
back. An old negro said to the Col-
onel on leaving “Well sir I am going
to put one in for you. anyway.” The
i Professor has abandoned his "biled"
shirt probably because it scratches
his neck mid don’t catch the farmer.
A CONGRESSIONAL FIGHT.
The Battle Between Peel Dinsmore
and Jones—Dinsmore in the Lead.
The Congressional contest in the
.! Fifth District was centered on the
! vote of Boone County yesterday the
last county in tlie District to
instruct. The vote iu the counties of
the district is ns follows:
Dinsmore—Crawford 10; Washing-
ton. Hi; Snare' 4; Carroll 7. Total 37.
Peel—Benton 14; Van Buren 4;
Madison. 8. Total 26.
: Jones—Newton. 3; Faulkner 8;
I Total. 11.
Necessary to a choice 42. The vote
of Boone is 8.
Newton and Madison have iustruct-
Jcd second for Dinsmore. Faulkner’s
delegation after Jones is dropped is
I said to be divided with a majority for
Peel. The fact seems to be recognized
that Jones cannot be nominated and
I if it turns out as some surmise that
the contest iu Boone was between Peel
and Dinsmore the fact does not argue
’ that Jones is without strength in his
i own county but simply because his
i nomination became impossible after
j the loss of Carroll aud the real tight
l is between Dinsmore mid Feel with
! the chances in favor of Dinsmore.
The convention which will decide
‘ | the question as to who will represent
' the Fifth iu tlie next Congress will be
held at Eureka Springs August 25.

lie made. About tlie Hogg quarters
there is news of encouraging nature.
They claim tlie contest in many coun-
ties one too frivolous to be entertained
nml consequently Hogg will be nom-
inated on the first ballot. At Clark's
headquarters his managers and Clark
1 himself are jubilant. They lay they
have enough votes to lock convention

GOLD DEMANDED.
One Million Dollars in Currency Ex-
changed for Gold.
New York. August 15.—A crucical
test of the policy of the Government
was made to-day when Heilbach
I' kelheinjer & Co. tendered $1000000
in Treasury notes which were issued
on account of silver purchases and de-
manded for them $1000000 in gold
to ship to Germany by to-morrow's
steamer. The Treasury officials made
no demurrer but paid out the SIOOO-
000 in gold in exchange for the Treas-
ury notes and the gold was carted
away aud put on the steamer. The
transaction excited some comment as
no home institution or home banking
tiriif has ever in the history of the
Government imide a like demand on
the Treasury and is some quarters an
impression prevailed that the export-
iug firm took this step not so much
to take the profit on this shipitMiut.
which in itself is too insignilicain for
a bunking firm to consider but really
for the purpose of causing a crisis. As-
sistant Treasurer Roberts was at the
sub-treasury while the gold for Ger-
many was being carted away. He ad-
mitted that it was the first time such
a demand was made although gold
has heretofore been given partly for
old and partly for new treasury notes.
He said in reply to questions:
‘ No steps have been taken by the ad-
ministration to prevent or obstruct the
export of gold. The Government
stands ready to meet all its obligations
in gold anil will pay nil iu gold. Its free
gold balance now amounts to $112000-
000.” By this statement of Treasurer
Roberts it is clear that the Government
has already decided on a plan to pay
all the silver treasury notes in gold if
it is demanded. Vice-President Can-
non of the Fourth National Bank
said he did not. think the gold surplus
would be reduced nt present but it
would lie increased instead as the
Treasury is now receiving gold from
the Eastern banks for truns-shlpment
to Hie West and the West is paying
out curieuey <>n account of ihese ship-
ments. By this step last year the
Government increased its gold hold-
ings $14000000.
