If Uncle Sam is bound to take
stock in the Sandwich islands a pro-
tectorate over them is perferable to
annexation as it would be less ex
pensive and troublesome.
The treasury department is the
proper placg. tor the framing of a
tariff bill to be considered by Con-
gress and the most competent man
in the United States to supervise the
preparation of such a bill is the Hon.
John G. Carlisle.—Albany Argus.
Congressman Terry it is stated
has announced that he will recom-
mend Prof. James Mitchell of the
Arkansas Democrat for postmaster
at Little Rock. Then he will be
very apt to receive the appointment.
He is the right man for the place.
The Missouri Pacific railway offers
to spend an equal amount of money
as the State in advertising the re-
sources of the State with a view to
induce immigration and capita). But
it must be intelligently advertised
and for the benefit of the whole State.
If Cleveland goes to giving Repub-
licans and mugwumps office we sin-
cerely hope that Senator Hill and oth-
ers in the Senate will make it red hot
for him. We say refuse to confirm
all such. Let none but Democrats
be fed from the public crib during
the next four years.
As the Russellville Democrat very
properly remarks Northwest Arkan-
sas h; s been well provided for this
time. That section has the governor
treasurer speaker of the house and
prison inspector. Yes most any one
will admit that Northwest Arkansas
should be satisfied.—Helena World.
Among the historical papers at
Washington there is said to be a
contract entered into between the
father of his country and the foreman
of his farm. The unique part or the
historic document is a clause which
provides that the foreman may get
drunk a certain number of times each
year without suffering the displeasure
of bis employer. He evidently was
a tippler of cherry bitters.
It seems that there is no longer
reason to doubt Judge Gresham’s go-
ing into Cleveland’s cabinet as Sec-
retary of State. The President elect
has precedent on his side in making
selection of a new convert or former
adversary politically. It is stated
on good authority that Lincoln and
Hayes each selected for cabinet posi-
tions former Democratic opponents.
Despite the frequent and positive
refusals of Mrs. Jefferson Davis to
accept a pension from the Southern
States bills are introduced in legis-
latures and cause much unnecessary
wrangling. Mrs. Davis does not care
to live on the bounty of the South
and her wishes should be respected.
She is thoroughly content to live on
the small income which her modest
fortune yields her.—Stuttgart Chron-
icle.
A minister annoyed by tobacco
chewing thus spoke to his congrega-
tion: "Take your quid of tobacco
out of your mouth on entering the
house of God and gently lay it on the
outer edge of the sidewalk or on the
fence. It will positively be there
when you go out for a rat won’t take
it neither will a hog. You are cer-
tain of your quirl when you go after
it. Not the filthiest vermin on earth
would twuch it”
It now appears that Hawaii will be
annexed to this country. Only one
power can now prevent the Sand-
wich Islands from becoming part of
the United States and that is Con-
gress. President Harrison and his
cabinet are now not only committed
to annexation but they have assured
the special envoys of commissioners
that a message will go to Congress in
a few days probably this week re-
viewing the recent events on the
islands noting the status of affairs
there at present and urging unnexa- >
lion legislation at once. Unless con-
gross offers obstinate opposition Ha-
waii will be a part of the United
States within a fortnight or three
weeks.

Surprising Testimony.
Many physicatis who have examin-
ed into the merits of B B B (Botanic
Blood Balm) have been confronted
with testimony which they deemed
surprising and thus being convinced
of its wonderful efficacy have not
failed to pseecribe it in their practice
as occasion required.
H L Cassidy Kennesaw Ga. writes:
“For two years my wife was a great
sufferer. Skillful physicians did her
no good. Her mouth was one solid
ulcer her body was broken out in
sores and she. lost a beautiful head of
hair. Three bottles of B B B cured
her completely incredible as it may
sound and she is now the mother of a
three months old baby clear from any
scrofulous taint.”
A. H. Morris Pine Bluff Ark.
writes: “Hot Springs and several
doctors failed to cure me of several
running ulcers on my leg B B B ef-
fected a wonderfully quick cure after
everything else bad failed.”

one dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all its stages and
that is catarrh. Hall’s Catarrh Cure

Health and Strength
“ Last winter I had the Grip and was qulta
sick. After I began to get better being weak
and run down I concluded to try Hood’s Sansa-
parilla seeing it recommended so highly. I
must . ay that I was more than pleased w|Aji it
I recovered my health completely In a short
time and think
I Am in Better Health
than before I was sick. I feci sure that this It
due to Hood’s Sarsaparilla. In the package of
Sarsaparilla when I opened it I found a sample
box of Hood's Pills. 1 was surprised and de-
lighted to find how well they agreed with me
no grilling and no weakening afterward. I
have tried many other kinds of pills but
Hood’s Pills
the preference every time now. I think they
are just wonderful. I am glad to recommend
two such good preparations as Hood’s Sarsa-
parilla and Hood’s Pills.’’ Mrs. Isaiah Em-

THE NEW YORK
FAMILY STDRY PAPER
por isuu.
FfiOSFECTTJS.
In beginning the eighteenth year of its successful career it is with a feeling of just
pride that the publisher of the
New York Family Story Paper
states that this . rest journal has double tho circulation of any family story paper in the
world. This claim which its competitors are invited to investigate can easily bo voriflod.
Tho pre-eminence thus accui ed can be achieved only by merit. The
.leading public will buy that i aper which best satisfies their desire for stories of the high-
est literary merit and most interesting character. And tho enormous circulation of the
New York Family Story proves that it has done this.
All the Great Features of the Paper
to which it owes its success of the past will bo zealously guarded in tho coming year. Its
distinguished staff of autho-s .ino g whom may bo inonlione i Mary Kyle Pallas Nellie

tained. its artistic excellence maintained its beautifUl typographical appearance preserved
and the same judicious editorial super ision exercised to keep the tone of the paper as pure
and moral as It has been from its inception.
No Hlxpeiv.se of Time or Money-
