in a fainting spell. At last accounts
the invalid was resting easily.

Official notice has been received by |
Judge L. A. Byrne of his appoint-
ment as special government counsel to
prosecute certain cases of alleged vio-
lation of the Federal election law in
which United States District Attorney
House is disqualified by reason of his
having been formerly employed as
counsel in the conduct of said cases.
Judge Byrne’s appointment is an ex-
cellent one and will meet with gen-
erel public approval. The cases above
spoken of are set for trial during the
present term of the Federal Court
now in session at this place.
There will be general rejoic'ng
among all classes of our people over
the welcome intelligence that the dan-
ger of an overflow from Red river has
materially lessened if not entirely
disappeared within the past few days.
During this time while the waters of
almost every other stream in
Arkansas have been rapidly rising
Red river has remained near-
ly stationary and for the first
time in years its waters have remained
unaffected by the vast floods rushing
down from the higher sources above.
At this writing the waters of Red
river are fully six feet below the level
of its banks and over thirteen feet
lower than the highest water mark
reached during the last great over-
flow. This is indeed news for general
rejoicing and thanksgiving.

We are requested to announce for ■
the benefit of those wishing to attend
the Baptist pic-nic at Twin Lakes to-|
morrow that the report concerning
the unfavorable condition of the
grounds is wholly unfounded. Super-
intendent Williams of the Texarkana |
& Ft. Smith railway informs ns that
the recent rains have not in any wise '
impaired the excellence of these
grounds which owing to the sandy |
soil absorbs the water rapidly re-
quiring only a few hours of sunshine
to put them into a condition as favor-
able as could be desired. We trust
therefore that no one will be deterred
from the pleasure of attending on this
account and that a large and jolly
crowd will assemble to assist in mak-
ing the day one of long remembered
joy and supreme happiness for child-
ish hearts present.
Trains on the Texarkana & Fort
Smith railway bearing the pic-nic ex-
cursionists to Twin Lakes will leave
their depot and waiting rooms
just opposite the Cotton Belt
and Union depots at 8:30 o’clock
tomorrow morning stopping at Rose
Hill and Watts’ crossings en-route and
returning at suitable hours. A bag-
gage car will be provided for the
baskets of the excursionists and am-
ple accomodations afforded for all
guests;
