court here. Mr. Gaines is one of Ar-
kansas’ best known and most popular
citizens having lived in the State for
many years. His permanent place of

Judge John A. Williams the able
Judge of the United States court for
the Eastern District of Arkansas ar-
rived iu the city last evening after a
short delay on account of illness iu
his family. Owing to Judge Williams’
non-arrival yesterday morning the
court was not opened until to-day.
The attendance of lawyers litigants
officers and other attaches of the
court is larger than at any previous
session. All of which goes to show
the increased business interests and
general importance ot Texarkana’s di-
vision of the court.

We rejoice to learn of the contin-
ued improvement in the condition of (
Mrs. J. W. Stuart the estimable wife I
of our esteemed fellow townsman *
Prof. J. W. Stuart. The sudden and '
severe illness which prostrated Mrs.
Stuart yesterday has been made to (
! succumb to the combined efforts of;
1 skillful medical attendance and unre- ;
mining personal care. At noon to-
day the invalid was said to be much
better and resting easily. This news |
will be gladly received by numerous
I friends of the family.
Three passenger coaches bearing
the Baptist Sunday School excursion-1
ists and their accompanying guests I
left the Texarkana & Ft. Smith depot
at 8:80 o’clock this a. m. for the pic-
nic grounds at Twin Lakes. The ex-
cursionists constituted the largest
gayest aud liveliest party of pleasure-
seekers whose assemblage has been
witnessed in this city for many months
past. Added to this was the charm-
ing effect of brilliant sunshine balmy
j breezes and smiling landscapes to
make the day one radiant promise and
I joyous anticipations. All of which
we trust were fully realized.
The spring term of the Texarkana
division of the United States District |
Court for the Eastern District of Ark-
ansas Judge John A. Williams pre-’
siding began its present session in |
this city to-day. The court is attend-
ed by a fulFcomplement of official as-1
sistants. The greater portion of to-1
day’s session was devoted to organiz-
ing and charging the grand jury be- j
fore which body an unusual amount of
business is expected to be presented.
Both the grand and petit juries are
composed of excellent men whose ap-
pearance would indicate a full capaci-
ty to deal with such legal problems as
may confront them. The present
docket shows an increase both in
amount and importance in the busi-
ness of the Court.
In Glass.
That’s the way Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant
Pellets come. And it’s a more im-
portant point than you think. It
keeps them always fresh and reliable
unlike the ordinary pills in cheap
wooden or pasteboard boxes.
They’re put up in a better way and
they act in a better way than the
huge old-fashioned pills. No griping
no violence no reaction afterward
that sometimes leaves you worse off
than before. In that way they cure
permanently. Sick Headache Bilious
Headache Constipation Indigestion
Bilious Attacks and all derangements
of the liver stomach and bowels are
prevented relieved aud cured.
They’re tiny sugar-coated granules
a compound of refined and concentrat-
ed vegetable extracts—the smallest in
size the easiest to take and the cheap-
est pill you can buy for they’re guar-
anteed to give satisfaction or your
money is returned. You pay only for
the good you get.
There’s nothing likely to be “just as
good.’’

We had the pleasure of a personal
greeting this a. m. with Hon. F. M.
Ball Bowie county's popular repre-
sentative in the state legislature. Mr. j
Ball has recently returned from the ;
state capital where he made his debut
as a Texas solon. During his first i
session Mr. Ball has succeeded in the
accomplishment of an object so great-
ly to be desired by all young legisla-
tors upon their initial entrance into
public life i. e. attracting to himself
the notice of both his associates and
the general public without resorting
to the usual tactics employed by inex-
perienced youths who are driven
heedlessly forward by personal egot-
ism or inordinate and impracticable
ambition. Indeed we congratulate
you Frank upon your more than fa-
vorable advent on the uncertain field
of public life and we might add po-
litical strife.

The members of this club at their
last meeting adopted a series of reso-
lutions denouncing fast riding except
in the extreme suburbs of the city
condemning the use of side walks on
Broad street for riders and enjoining
the observance of strictest care in the
use of side walks in the retired por-
tions of the town. Ths spirit of the
■ club is shown in the sth Resolution
' as follows:
“We will constantly bear in mine
that bicycles baby carriages and oth-
I er light vehicles are used on the side
i walks by courtesy of the citizens only
and will show our appreciation of the
privilege by at all times riding in
such a manner as to neither endanger

that it is our place to keep out of their
1 way aud not theirs to keep out of
ours.” ellw
