The Band Concert at Park Byrne
last evening was in every way an ex-
cellent and enjoyable affair. The in-
creased attendance evidenced the
growing favor in which the efforts of
the band boys to provide social
amusement for the local public is be-
ing held. The receipts of the evening
left a hairasome balance after paying
the expenses of the entertainpient.
We publish elsewhere in this issue j
a letter from Mr. J. W. Gardner of
the Democrat who is in attendance
on the Arkansas Press Association at
Fort Smith. From the tone of his
correspondence we should judge that
he is having a decidedly' good time
and making excellent use of the brief
holiday from journalistic labors thus
afforded. He is expected home to-1
morrow.
How do you do when you buy shoes
or clothing? Don’t you go to the
place (if you can find it) where they
tell you that you may wear the artic-
les out and then if you’re not satis-
fied they’ll refund the money? Why
not do the same when you buy medi-
cine?
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Dis-
covery is sold on that plan. It’s the
only blood-purifier so certain and ef-
fective that it can be guaranteed to
benefit or cure in every case or you
have your money' back.
It’s not like the ordinary spring
medicines or sarsaparillas. All the
year round it cleanses builds up and
invigorates the system. If you’re bil-
ious run-down or dyspeptic or have
any' blood taint nothing can equal it
as a remedy.

The streets and allays of the East
Side are already in fairly good condi-
tion and wo trust the important work i
of sanitation will be carried forward
on both sides of the line and our city
put In a thorough condition of clean-
liness before the heated aud sickly
term which embraces the next three
months is upon us. During the sul-
try days of July and August the dead-
ly disease germs are wormed into
life and the accumulation of filth in a
thickly settled community at this
caitical time is doubly fatal to the
health aud even lives of the inhabi-
tants.
An important item of news in local
railway circles is that which an-
nounces the coming of Mr. W. S. New-
land to Texarkana as chief assistant
to General Superintendent J. A. Ed-
son of the Cotton Belt system. Mr.
Newland was first private secretary to
General Manager Dodridge and sub-
sequently held a similar position un-
der President Fordyce at St. Louisl
from which place he comes directly to
this city to make his permanent head-
quarters here. Mr. Newland is an im-
portant figure in the Cotton Belt man-
agement having been associated for
years with men at the very head of
the service aud being himself an able
and experienced man. His coming
and future location here is a long step
toward the general return of Cotton
Belt officials to Texarkana. It at least
points that way.

will be foolish to buy from the Stuarts.
