TEXARKANA ARKANSAS MONDAY EVENING. OCTOBER 16 18113.
AN OVATION!
That's Whal Our Grand Effort
is Meeting With.
Almost A Unit Are Our Enter
prising Citizens In Encour-
aging the Project
A Barrel of Money Is its
Worth to Texarkana and
Our People Recog-
nize The Fact.
Space Is Being Rapidly Consumed
And Still The Army of Progress
And Enterprise Grows
Larger And
Larger.
Neither Money Labor Nor Pains to
be Spared in Making it the
Moat Complete and Hand-
somest Edition Ever
Gotten Up in This
Section.
As each day is numbered with the
past the success of our grand special
trade edition becomes an assurity.
Mr. David has simply met with a con-
tinuous ovation auct for this vve de-
sire to heartily thank our friends and
patrons believing justly that our
great effort will meet the approval of
the entire commuuity.
The paper will be issued in a very
short period and will contain a com-
plete photograph of Texarkana and
Bowie aud Miller counties. Ot course
a great portion of the success to be
attained depeuds upon the liberality
with which the people patronize the
enterprise. Let every business man
and all who feel an interest in our
city and counties take into considera-
tion the value of each a paper when
put into the home and tlie hands of
every voter of Miller and Bowie coun-
ties and distributed copiously in Cass
aud Marion counties Texas and Lit-
tle River Howard Lafayette and
Hempstead counties. Arkansas—and
especially since there is not in exist-
ence today aud has not beeu iu the
past ten years a reliable directory
much less a description of city aud
counties.
Os course the Democrat expects to
make some money out of the under-
taking (we are not here altogether for
pleasure or our health) but the money
we may realize frpm it will not be a
bagatelle of the advantage that will
accrue to the public generally.
We drop this limb to the merchants
and business people generally. That
this special trade edition will furnish
them the best means offered in a long
time to get their business before all
the people and that too in a form
most attractive and lasting.
Space is being rapidly consumed
and we would advise those who have
not already placed their orders for
space to do so at once. We shall en-
deavor to see every one and thus |five
all a fair and equal chance to aid
themselves their business town and
county.
THE EAGLE SCREAMS.
New York Oct. 13. —The Ameri-
can eagle screeched long and loud to-
day when tho peerless yacht Vigilant
defeated the English yacht Valkyrie
for the third time aud the America’s
cup will remain in this country for a
while at least. Valkyrie led in tho
early part of the race but Vigilant
passed her near the finish aud won
by a scant margin.
Os course in view of the failure of
British Valkyrie to make a showing
amounting to anything against Amer-
ican Vigilant there was plenty of
rooqi on the excursion boats when
they began beading down the bay
after the yachts. The leaden sky was
dark; cyclonic hiuts of old shellbacks
kept many ladies away but tho regu-
lar enthusiasts were out ns usual
armed with yachting caps and marine
opera glasses resolved to see if the
cup challenger would behave any bet-
ter today with her increased ballast.
An extra ton of lead ballast placed
iu the Valkyrie’s amidships yesterday
gave her au increased load line and
necessitated her renieasurement by
Official Measurer llyslop of the New
York yacht club. Before tlie extra
lead was placed inside tho Valkyrie
the Vigilant allowed her 1 minute 48
seconds; with the additional weight
and lower sitting in tho water tlie
Vigilant only allowed the Valkyrie 1
minute and 88 seconds; the letter s
load hne was increased .46 of a foot
by the ballasting and made her racing
leugth 93.57 feet.
The weather and other conditions
were all that the most entliusiastic
yachtmau could have desired for the
final race of the series between the
•‘white-winged” champions of Ameri-
can patriotism and British pt ide.
Lord Dunraven’s incessant petition
for more wind had apparently beeu
answered for when the signal to start
was given a heavy wind was blowing
straight out trom the shore at the
rate ot tweuiy-four miles an hour
which increased to twenty-seven iu a
short time. The race was as close
and exciting as could have beeu wish-
ed aud gave the gallant Vigilant her
first hard earned victory over an op-
ponent which had therefore proven
only too weak an alagonist. The ves-
sels started ou their final race at 12:07
p. m.
At 3 o’clock the Valkrie was in the
lead with tlie Vigilant creeping stead-
ily up before strong wind and gain-
ing at every foot.
At 3:3i the AHgilant came up foot
by foot and at 3:33 she swept past the
challenger.
Following are the finishes:
Vigilant 3:51:05
Valkyrie 3:53:10
Less time allowance 1:33
Vigilant won by 32 seconds.
. The World's Fair !
Take it all in all the world is fair.
That is its judgments are pretty gen-
erally just. No doubt it lias formed
many incorrect conclusions from the
time the caravels of Columbus appear-
ed off the shores of San Salvador to
the present year of celebration but
there are instances of its fairness
which can be sighted unquestioned.
It has after comparative tests given
its award to Hostetter’s Stomach Bit-
ters for efficacy in cases of malarial
rheumatic and kidney disorder dys-
pepsia liver complaint constipation
nervousness and debility. Among
“positive facts without any doubt”
this verdict deserves a prominent
place. The experience ot a genera-
tion justifies and the concurrent testi-
mony of hosts of eminent physicians
bear out its truth. Give the Bitters a
fair trial and verify it.

The Texarkana Times thus spoke of
this novelty when here before: The
Australian 99 cent store on Broad

success. It is crowded with the beet
citizens of Texarkaua and vicinity.
The Australian plau of selling the
goods has beeu decided by the high-

ARKANSAS WINS AGAIN.
She Has Been Given the Award for
the Finest and Best Cotton.
News reached the city yesterday
that Arkansas had been given the |
award for the finest and best long I
staple as well as the finest and best I
short staple cotton.
Col. Geo. W. Martin of the judges
of awards on cotton of Little Rock
was officially notified of tlie fact Sat- j
urday and there will be great rejoic- :
iugiu Arkansas over the result. This !
is an award conferred on no other 1
Southern State and repays tlie State
alone for her efforts in making a dis-
play at Chicago.
With the finest zinc carbonates the
finest apples and her educational
awards and the finest and best cotton.
Arkansas has reason to feel proud of
herself and of the noble and energetic
band of men and women who contri-
buted of their money and work to
this glorious end.
Tho great and far reaching impor-
tance of this World’s fair work is
realized by comparatively few people
and the almost incalculable benefits
which are sure to accrue both tdstate
and people through this great me-
dium of advertisement which lias
shown the vast undeveloped resources
aud superior natural advantages of
our state to the world arc beyond the
power of the present generation to
compute.
The great good which has been ac-
complished for tlie state by reason of
this work will extend unto succeed-
ing generations and the seed of pros-
perity planted by this generation will
reach full fruition in the next bearing
a rich harvest unto our children to be
governed by them as a heritage. And
by them bequeathed in turn to pos-
terity. Such are the splendid achieve-
ments of the great work as seen “in
futuro” by the prophetic eyes of
todav.
A CROWN OF JEWELS.
According to a recent estimate
made by a noted expert in the quality
and value of rare and precious stones
the crown of England's queen is one
of the most costly rare aud beautiful
ornaments of modern royalty and con-
tains one of the most magnificent col-
lections of jewels iu the world. It
comprises more than 3000 precious
stones set in various designs. The
most prominent gem is the ruby given
to Edward the Black Prince by Pe-
dro King of Castile. It is in the
front of the crown set iu a maltese
cross composed of seveaty-five large
diamonds. The lower part of the
crown band contains a row of 129
pearls; tlie upper part 112. Back of
that again is a smaller sapphire sur-
rounded by six others and eight em-
eralds. Between the two larger sap-
phires are designs containing 286
diamonds. Above the band arq eight
more sapphires surmounted by eight
diamonds and the same number of
festoons contain 160 diamonds. Be-
sides Ute maltese cross there are three
others around the upper part of the
crown containing 386 diamonds and
between the four are four ornaments
each with a ruby in the center and
containing respectively eighty-four
eighty-six eighty-five and eight'y-
seven diamonds. From the crosses
rise four arches composed of oak
leavesand acorns the leaves contain-
ing 728 diamonds. The thirty-two
acorns arc each of a single pearl and
are set in cups made of fifty-four dia-
monds. Above the arches stands the
mound containing 548 diamonds and
above the mound is the cross contain-
ing a very largo sapphire four very
large and 108 smaller diamonds. All
the stones are genuine ajtd not as in
some other European crowns colored
glass which has replaced the genuine
stones. The crown entire is valued
nt $1500000.

Needs assistance it may be best to
render it promptly but zone should
remember to use even the most per-
fect remedies only when needed. The

Sells’ Great Show.
Due of tlie finest aud iu every way
most pleasing aud superiorattractious
of the year iu the circus Hue was tlie
Sells Bros.’ great show and splendid
street pageant which appeared in Ibis-
city on Saturday the 14th Inst At
each of the two performances here
their spacious tent was filled with
thousands of eager nnd interested
spectators who enjoyed to the full
each separate act and feature of the
excellent programme of amusement.
The animal tent was also a center of
attraction and interest exhibitlug
many rare aud wonderful species of|
atiimal life. To enumerate separately |
tlie deserving features of so largo aud .
varied a collection would be well J
nigh impossible. But it may safely be 1
said that no single feature was devoid ■
of interest and merit. Equal praise i
may also bo accorded to the manage-
ment of the show the same being in
the hands of clever aud deserving j
men of which number Col Charles
Seeley Sells Bros.’ noted press agent;
is a fair representative.
How sad to our hearts are some scenes
of our childhood.
As our recollections present them
to
The use of the switch that was brought

And various punishments most of
us knew.
But saddest of all is the thought of
the pill-box
That mother brought out when she
thought we were ill
O! the griping the aching the twist-
ing and torment
Wrapped up in the horrible old-
fashioned pill.
But that’s all done away with. To
regulate the stomach liver and bow-
els Dr. Bierce's relicts excel. You’ll
experience no pain no diecomfort no
bad results. Children take them as
readily as peppermint drops.

COMPROMISE MEASURES.
Continuation ot the Sherman Act
with the Issue of Bonds.
The one subject of paramount inter-
est in Washington City and in fact
throughout the country just now is
“what the administration thinks of
the adjournment by the repealers
Friday morning aud whether or not
it will affect the President’s ultra anti-
silver sentiments." in conversation
on this subject a certain Cabinet offi-
cial. whose position to know nnd au-
thority to speak are unquestioned af-
ter first stipulating that his uame be
kept secret gave tlielollowing outline
of the Administration’s present posi-
tion on the financial problem:
He stated that the Administration
was now for unconditional repeal as
it had always been'and that it was
not considering or thinking of a com-
promise. Tlie position is shown in a
conference which occurred between
Senator Harris of Teuneese aud Sec-
retary Carlisle a day ago on
tho subject of a compromise. Mr. Car-
lisle said:
“The Administration lias made its
proposition; it is that tlie purchasing
clause of tho Sherman law be uncon-
ditionally repealed. Your side will
either accept it or reject it. Do one
or the other by a vote. If you reject
it then the Administration will be in
a position to make another proposi-
tion.”
There has not yet been a compro-
mise proposition submitted that could
carry a majority ot the antl-repealers.
It will be seen therefore that tlie Ad-
ministration could hardly afford to
offer one proposition of compromise
and then another until they became
interminable with the hope of dually
getting a proposition that will suit
the incongruous Clement in the anti-
repeal ranks.
One thing is certain ami that is that
tho administration is desirous of fight-
ing it out on the line now adopted
and it will back its men iu tho senate
to the full extent in opposing any and
ail compromises. At the same time
the position of the administration is
an assumed one and that it wants a
compromise. They declare that at
this very time the administration is
working on a compromise bill which
will contain the following provisions:
The coinage of the seigniorage now
in the treasury which will turn out
$53000000 the purchase of $2500000
bullion a month for coinage tlie re-
peal of the 10 per cent on stato banks
the retirement of small notes and tlie
substitution of larger oucs tlie issue
of $100000000 or $150000000 of
■bonds to be sold for a gold reserve
the cessation of coinage when SBOO-
000000 or *s9oo/100000111 silver are
in circulation.
