Superstition finds odd manifesta-

entreaties of a number of landlords i
and omitted the number thirteen in 1
renumbering several street’.

as not far short of nine hundred. 1

A kodak fiend in Chicago has in- .
vented a new terror for that instru-
merit of torture. He goes to church !
and takes snap snot pictures of people (
who go to sleep during the sermon. ]
Utiles this thing is stopped it will
make church-going unfashionable.
At. funerals in the City of Mexico I
no hearses are used. The street rail- ’
way company has a monopoly of the
funeral business. It runs funeral cars
white for children and black for adults
and mourners follow to the cemetery
iu a richly upholstered special car.
It has been computed that in a sin-
gle cubic foot of the ether which fills 11
all space there are locked up 10.000 I
foot to"s of energy which has hitherto
escaped notice. To unlock this bound- ;
less stock and subdue it to the service
■of man is a task which awaits the elec-
trician of the future.

(Ince our city is provided with a
good and sufficient sewerage system
its officials will be at leisure to con-
ceive and carry out plans for other
needed and desired local improve-
ni tits. But for the time being the
sewerage project should take prece-
dence over all others both because of
its importance aud immediate neces-
sity.
Dr. John Goode an old and well

the late Professor Richard A. Proctor

of lectures on astronomy for children
all over the country during the com-
ing season. The course consists of
three lectures for children entitled:

Mme. Carnot the wife of the Presi-
dent of France has the reputation ot
! being the b st-dressed woman in that
I country of well-dressed women. She
is a grandmother but there are times
when she does not look over 25 years
of age. She is a pronounced bru-
nette with not as ilver hair or wrinkle
and has the eyes of youth. She is
tactful aud graceful.
Women who want to marrj should
turn their eyes toward Johannesburg
iu South Africa. There are at least
ten men to one women there. Every
modera'ely attractive woman marries
within a few months after landing.
It is impossible to keep servants or
feminine employes of any sort. Type-
writers nurses cooks maids garden-
ers all melt quickly away below the
warmth of South African wooing.
J. J. Sykes a prominent Little Rock
business man has been arrested on a
requisition from the governor of Tex-
as charging him with grand larceny
alleged to have been committed at
Georgetown Texas Sykes has for
some time past been superintendent
of the Consumers’ Cotton Oil Com-
pany at Little Rock and his arrest on
such a charge has created a decided
sensation in the social and business
circles of the capital city wherein the
accused had been received and well
thought of.
Dan T. Lary Esq. has contracted
for the laying of a very handsome
side-walk fronting the property on
Maple and Spruce streets West side.
The walk is to be composed of tiling
made at Malvern Ark. and to cost
the very moderate sum of sucts. per
foot lineal measure the walk to be
full width of six feet. The tiling is
made into blocks 2 inches thick and
8 inches square. This tiling is said to
be as ornamental as it is durable aud
useful. It is manufactured by Thos.
Atchison of Malvern.
Texarkana has a number of live
pushing and progressive citizens who
are always io be found at the helm of
public affairs aud whose shoulders are
ever ready to be put to the wheel
when a public spirited enterprise is
on foot. It is a great pity that there
are not many more just such men
who combined together both iu pur-
pose and action would soon force
their city to a front rank in the con-
test for industrial and commercial su-
premacy. Indeed those whom we al-
ready possess have accomplished much
toward this end.
The story told of a newly elected
member of the Chamber of Deputies
in France might well be made to ap-
ply to some ot our Congressmen re-
gardless of age or length of public
service. When questioned as to what
his future course should be in regard
to needed National reforms the
French Statesman in embryo said:
‘•Oh I shall do as the others do. In
other words. I am determined not to
swerve one inch from the path of
tradition.” Perhaps our American
Solon might be too shrewd to make
the acknowledgement but a glance
into the future would no doubt dem-
onstrate its existence as a settled leg-
islative principle.

them anil the A. S. DeLamar shoe store
East Broad Street is the plaee. There
may be a question about what school

room for the shadow of a doubt what
shoes to wear in going to school. Unques-

and look best are always to be had at A.
S. DeLamar. None of our footwear will
be found lacking in any of these points
and Young America is surer of a better
fit with a better shoe for a lower price at
