The bluebottle flly discharges a not
unimportant duty as a natural scaven-
ger. Its larvae innggot must devour
large quantities of putrifyiug and de-
caying matter and must therefore re-
move from the earth’s surface much
material offensive if not disease pro-
ducing in its tendencies.
We hear echoes from the Democrat’s
trade edition daily in the form of
kind and commendatory words both
from the press and people of this sec-
tion. The edition was a large one
and covered a wide field placing the
resources and advantages of Texar-
kana before the eyes of thousands of
people.
Among the crown Jewels of Eng-
land in the tower of Loudon is kept
'he “coronation spoon.” It dates from
e time of Edward the Confessor

with gems and is used to receive the
concecrated oil used at the coronation.
It is sometimes called (lie ‘ anointing

A slight rainfall just after dark last
evening marred to some extent the
success of the church supper given by
the Baptist ladies. Neither time nor
trouble had been spared in preparing
for the event which despite adverse
weather was both a pleasant and
profitable one. Something over SSO
was the amount realized as the pro-
ceeds of the supper. This will be
employed by the ladies in behalf of
their church the First Baptist.

The new Episcopal church building
which is now nearly completed pre-
sents a very attractive appearance and
is quite an ornament to that portion
of the city. When finished the inte-
rior of the structure will present
equally as pleasing an appearance as
that of the exterior. The work of
decoration hue already begun and will
be simple and tasteful rather than
elaborate. Much credit is due the
Episcopal ladies in their untiring la-
bors in this behalf.
The city has suffered recently from
an epidemic of fires entailing a loss
of many thousands of dollars upon the
merchants and property owners. As
a rule our local fire departments both
of which are voluntary have been
prompt and efficient and the water
supply excellent. But in a city of
Texarkana’s size acd commercial im-
portance there should be an im-
proved and thoroughly equipped fire
department provided with every nec-
essary device for battling with the
fire fiend. Taking in consideration
the limited equipments with which
they have been provided Texarkana’s
fire departments have accomplished
wonders. But this is no reason why
the city should not increase and im-
prove these departments
In Olden Times
People overlooked the importance of
permanently beneficial effects and
were satisfied with the transient act-
tion but now that it is generally
known that Syrup of Figs will perma-
nently cure habitual constipationwell-
informed people will not buy other
laxatives which act for a time but fi-
nally injure the system.

change is made in order to help the
ladies of the Christian church who it
is claimed will have more patronage

On Christmas Day a free dinner
will be served to the poor children of
the city.

For school wear. Now is the time to get
them and the A. S. DeLamar shoe store

may be a question about what school
books to use in Texarkana but there isn’t
room for the shadow of a doubt what
shoes to wear in going to school. Unques-
tionably the shoes that fit best wear best
and look best are always to be had at A.
S. DeLamar. None of our footwear will
be found lacking in any of these points
and Young America is surer of a better
fit witli a better shoe for a lower price at

durable well fitting and handsome shoes
would be cheap at a higher price than we
are offering but at our figures they are
doubly so. We are selling. 84.00 shoes
