! Mr. J. H. Bigger an old citizen of
i Texarkana and for years engaged in
; business here has returned to the city
I from Pennsylvania to which State he
| moved with bis family some months
j since intending to make bis home
there. But like many others “Jake”
I has found that Texarkana was far too
I good a town to leave and life here
too pleasant for a man to seek else-
where to live. He arrived on yester-
day’s cannon ball and will be follow-
ed by bis family as soon as the holi-
days arc over.
The high cost of the Encpclopcedia
Britannica lias heretofore been the
great bar to its popular use. The
English Edition cost $200.00 per set
and the American Edition $125.00 in
the cheapest binding. These prices
have almost compelled people to pur-
chase the cheaper and poorer Encyclo-
pedias but through the Dallas News’
liberal introductory offer this new
and improved edition brought down
to date may for a short time be ob-
tained for less than one-fourth the
price asked for the original and that
too on the remarkably easy terms o 4
only ten cents a day.
One week from today is Christmas
and the following week will be main-
ly devoted to holiday festivities
While the suggestion will perhaps
savor rather too much of moralizing
yet we cannot help adding that the
manner in which people keep their
holidays especially those of “Chris'-
mas time” serves better than any oth-
er single thing to indicate their true
condition from a worldly point of
view. We have often observed that a
prosperous year means a joyous holi-
day observance and vice versa. Even
the very children themselves seem to
be affected by the general sense of
prosperity or foreboding of adversity
present or to come. This community
of sentiment is less noticeable in eith-
er of the extremes of wealth or pov-
erty than in the great middle class
whose members are either more close-
ly allied by equality of possession and
social standing or else living nearer
to nature and each other make com-
mon sense both of prosperity and ad-
versity.
The growth of our city during the
past live years of her history has
been almost phenomenal considering
the condition of affairs throughout
the country and the relative progress
of surrounding towns. Where other
communities have struggled along
barely holding their own in tbe great
contest for supremacy Texarkana has
forged steadily forward to the front
improving if not always rapidly at
least surely and steadily pushing on-
ward step by step and gaining ground
every year. At no time during this
period lias the city taken a backward
step nor hits she at any time been ab-
solutely on a standstill. Her-boom”
days are yet Jo come having
as yet not been favored with a
“boom” she baa not been forced to
suffer from the “recoil ” Her growth
hits been steady and healthful and her
development rational and stable. Al-
together her people have much to be
: grateful for and proud of so far as
their city is concerned.
