DALLAS.—The support of num-
erous white men of wealth and high
standing in Dallas was not sufficient
to prevent a jury from giving a
verdict of 25 years in the peniten-
tiary for Algie King, of Hutchins
for the murder of his brother-in-
law, Charlie James, June 19 on pic-
nic grounds in Hutchins.
Lawyers, merchants, and bankers
took the witness stand Monday and
Tuesday and testified that King was
a “good Negro," "But" replied Pros
7 ecutor Henry Tirey, “the man Kin,
killed was a ‘good Negro’."
Prosecutor Tirey claimed the
' white attorneys for King attempted
to place slight value upon the life
of a Negro, and that the white 'wit-
nesses were paraded only to gain
the sympathy of the white jurors.
The principal and most damaging
witnesses against King were Ne-
• groes. King's attorneys hinted sev-
eral times during the trial that the
testimony of the colored witnesses
did not warrant as much considera-
tion as that of the white character
witnesses.
Lawyers Turned Down
Kipg went on trial Monday morn-
ing after the failure of his attorneys
to gain a continuance of the case
until a later date.
King was charged with killing
Charlie James, his brother-in-law,
after the two had had an argument
over the slapping by King of his
and shot him in the back oi the
head.
The defense of King for himself
crumbled like a pebble under a
rock crusher when he was cross ex-
amined on the witness stand. He
testified in his defense that he hit

own wife. Shortly after the argu-
ment King killed his brother-in- died July 25 at his home, 1918 Copp
law with a large pistol of .45 calibre.
Testimony introduced in the trial know citizen of Texarkana and De-
’ showed that someone came up be- troit, Texas. He had been ill for the
hind James while he was standing
at a banana stand buying bananas
James once on the arm and once
on the head and that as he did so
he heard shots some distance from
him and that James fell and he ran.
King Falters On Stand
Later as Prosecutor Tirey shot
questions at him King said that ac-
cidentally the thumb cock of his
. gun went off twice but that the
. bullets did not hit James. 'Asked
how he. could account for two bullet
9 ''shots being heard from a thumb-
" —cocked gun which could not. go off
more than once without the thumb
cock being, pulled back for the sec-
ond charge King sat bewildered and
excited as if he were in a hot spot.
Tirey said, “To shoot a second time
W the gun could not have gone off by
- accident*
King's failure to keep a straight
story on the stand stood him in bad
stead When Prosecutor Tirey went
before the jury for final arguments.
He termed the killing of James “the
^ most cold blooded I have ever
heard of."
Despite King’s denial of taking
j Ms wife’s brother’s life three eye
witnesses were produced by the
state. Most interesting was Miss
Maxine Perry of Hutchins, a school
teacher. She calmly stated that King
