AT SNYDER
Bootmaker, Native
Of Poland, Retires
SNYDER, Aug. 3.—(Spl.)—A
bootmaker in the U. S. for 39
years and in the business over 38
years, Pete Benbenek of Snyder
has retired from active shop work.
Benbenek, widely known for his
famous hand made boots, came to
the United States in 1907 from
Poland. Before he came to Snyder
PETE BENBENEK
in 1914 he worked in Kansas. Ok-
lahoma and other Texas points.
When Benbenek moved here in
1914 Snyder was a thriving cow
town. He established his boot shop
in the northwest corner of the
court house basement where he
remained three years. He has been
at various locations around the
square in his 28 years here.
Mr. Benbenek, during his
fruitful span of work here,
shipped boots to Montana,
Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona,
New Mexico, California and in
the Lone Star State from
Brownsville to Dalhart and
other sectors.
A few of the well known ranch-
ers here he has made boots for
include the late J. J. Koonsman;
Harrie Winston, Billie Johnston
and others.
Benbenek started the boot mak-
ing trade in Poland, his homeland,
at the age of 13. Before he came
to the U. S. he worked at his trade
in Russia, Austria, Hungary and
in Germany. His boy, Ordon,
whom his father taught boot mak-
ing, is following in the elder Ben-
benek’s foot steps.
During the Japanese-Rus-
sian war, Pete Benbenek serv-
ed four years in the Russian
army as s bootmaker super-
visor. Over 3,000 pairs of
army boots a year were made 1
under his leadership.
It was in 1915 that Miss Ethel
Wasson of Snyder and Mr. Ben-
benek were married. They had
three girls, Wanda, Thaba and
Thana; and two sons, Ordon and
Daren. Mrs. Benbenek died two
years ago and Lieut. Daren Ben-
benek, a P-51 fighter pilot, lost
his life in World war II when he
was shot down over Belgium.
