Fund Started
For Aid of
Red Refugees
NEW YORK, Aug. 27. u—The
flight of the Russian school teach-
er who leaped from * Soviet con-
sulate window has led to estab
lishment of a fund to aid ref-
ugees from communism in this
country. ;
Common Cause, Ire. an ant-
Communist organization, an-
nouneed formation of the fund yes-
terday—partly to provide medical
expenses, legal aid end future em-
ployment for the teacher, Mrs. Ok-
gana Kasenkina, 52. *
“Officials of the organization said
the fund would be called the "Kas-
ankina Fund for Victims of Com-1
munism.”
They stated also that the fund
would be used to persuade other
Soviet citizens in this country "to
choose freedom like Mrs. Kasen-
kina."
The teacher, whose refusal to re-
turn to Russia started a series of
events that led to severing of
American -Soviet consular rela-
tions, has been promised asylum
here by the state department.
Her story—which she told news- !
men in a hospital-room inter-
view Wednesday—was beamed to
Moscow in full by the "Voice of
America.”
Other phases of her story may
be contained In two letters alleged- I
ly written by Mrs. Kasenkina Cop-
ies of the letters are being turned
ever to New York City police by
"the state department.
The notes are believed to be one
which the teacher wrote to Soviet
Consul Gneral Jacob M. Lomakin
while she was at a White Russian
anti-Communist camp and anoth-
er she wrote just before her leap
from the consulate where she was 1
taken from the camp.
Photostatic copies of the letters. |
handed over to the U. 8. by Mos-
cow are to be given to police to
Determine if they are genuine.
Meanwhile, Consul General Lo-
makin. who the teacher said had
held her prisoner until her leap,
was winding up his chores in this
country.
Stripped of his credentials by
President Truman, he is scheduled
to sail for home tomorrow.
