Texas Vets' Bonus
Jolted by Committee
AUSTIN. May 10 (UP)—Veter-
ans' hopes for a Texas soldier's
bonus grew dim today
. A proposed constitutional amend-
ment, by Rep J A Benton of Wy-
lie, to pay $300 million in bonuses
to Texas veterans of three wars
was sent to subcommittee last night
by the House State Affairs Com-
mittee Benton would raise funds
by a bond issue.
A “two-week" time limit was set
for the subcommittee to report
back, which virtually sounded the
death knell for the bonus, as far as
the 51st Legislature is concerned.
Under Benton s plan veterans of
the Spanish-American War and two
world wars would have received
$10 for each month's domestic serv-
ice and $15 for overseas service, or
a maximum of $500 whereas prison-
| ers of war and dependents of de-
| ceased veterans would have receiv-
ed up to $750
