on-sweeping Red military machine
from the north. The gates of this
metropolis of a million inhabitants
are open to the troops of the new-
ly proclaimed Communist govern-
ment at Peiping.
The Nationalists once more have
moved their government to the an-
cient city of Chungking, which
perches on the towering crags be-
side the upper Yangtze like an
eagle on its aerie This is, In a
manner of spcakig. the last outpost
of the retreating regime.
Chungking is the capital which
the Nationalists occupied in the
dark days of the world war A
few miles further west Is the mist-
shrouded hump which caps the
lowering mountain barrier be-
tween China and Burma—the
hump, of evil memories for Amer-
ican and British airmen.
How much longer can the Na-
tionalists hold out in face of such
misfortune? Over in Bucharest.
Romania, the Cominform Journal
called developments in China the
, “greatest defeat for world reac-
tion and imperialism." This jour-

the political organization which
links all Communist countries, pre-

China will promote revolutions in
India, Burma, Indonesia and oth-

100.000 new homes in September,
setting a record for that month
which one government official
termed "remarkable."
The Bureau of Labor Statistics
reported the figures offered new
evidence of a spurt to make up the
country’s housing deficit—in a sea-
son, the BLS official noted, when
activity usually slows down in anti- T
cipation of bad building weather. N
The total was only 300 homes 1
short of the postwar peak reached
in May, 1948 But this year's
pattern was wholly different. 1
Last year housing starts declined •
steadily from May on; this year *
has seen an unbroken, month-by. .
month rise since January, 1
mentous effects not only in Asia
but around the globe But let's
not be hasty in reaching a conclu-
sion What will constitute victory
in China?
Victory means not only the
smashing of the enemy military 1
strength but the establishment of
a government which really can |
govern That means a government
which has the cooperation of
China's five hundred million peo-
ple. for you can't handle that
many folk without their coopera-
tion.
On that basis the Communists
have a weary way to march be-
fore they even get a glimpse of
success. What they see now la a
mirage—fascinating but intangible
