Don’t Be Taken In By The Fake Tax Men
0 It is a timely warning that District Direc-
tor Ellis Campbell Jr., Internal Revenue
sounds when he cautions the public to be
ware of people who may be impersonating
tax collectors. Be sure to keep this in mind.
Mr, Campbell declares that this is the
ployees of the Internal Revenue Service as-
signed to collections, audit or intelligence
responsibilities carry distinctive identifica-
tion credentials. Remember that. Also, if
you’re approached by a person who claims
to be an employee of the IRS, request iden-
time of year when it is not uncommon for. tification from him. If you are still in
unscrupolous individuals to pose as either
revenue officers or revenue agents to EX-
TORT MONEY on the pretense of satisfying
unpaid taxes.
And he emphasizes all bona fide em-
doubt,” he suggests—“contact the nearest
Internal Revenue office as soon as possib-
le.” Don’t be taken in. Furthermore—if op-
portunity arises, protect others.

cotton check-off legislation with
using unfair tactics to gain their
objective.
In a letter to the County Farm
Bu. Pres. DeVaney said that ac-
tivities of the National Cotton
Council andother cotton indus-
try leaders have “reached the
point that we feel serious con-
sideration should be given to'
these tactics and proper action
taken by County Farm Bureau
leaders.”
Specifically, the TFB leader
charged check - off proponents
are going to county Farm Bu-
reaus in cotton-producing areas
in an effort to get statements
supporting the check-off in op-
position in Farm Bureau policy.
“We were told by these
groups that if we persisted in
opposing the check-off legisla-
tion they would seriously
weaken or destroy Farm Bu-
reau,” DeVaney said.
Farm Bureau opposes the bill
(H.R. 12322) which has already
passed the House by a narrow
margin and is to be taken
soon by the Senate Agriculture
Committee. The bill provides
for a $1 check - off on cotton for
research and promotion if ap-
proved by a two-thirds majority
of cotton producers voting in
referendum.

already in one of them, were re-
ported today by the Sheriff’s De-
partment.
Two white men from Dallas
were arrested in connection with
a burglary at a barn between
Midlothian and Ovilla where
saddles, bridles, a chainsaw and
hand-tools were stolen.
Burglary of the residence of
the Thomas Melton Cook family
west of Maypearl also was re-
ported, but no arrests had been
made. There, a television set and
a clock radio were stolen.
In other action, a man was
jailed for DWI.

known of Texas’ figures in gov-
ernment.
Martin served as Governor
Connally’s Secretary of State for
3 years and has a record of
public service dating back two
decades to his election as mayor
of his native Hillsboro.
After two terms as mayor,
Martin felt he had a greater
obligation to his community and
state. He successfully sought the
Senate seat once occupied by his
father, the late Senator Will M.
Martin. Martin, 50, served con-
tinuously in the Senate for 14
years. During that time he held
major committee positions and
sponsored some of the State’s
most significant legislation. He
was honored by his colleagues
by being elected President Pro
Tempore of the Senate in 1955
—the highest tribute the Sen-
ate can pay a member. Governor
John Connally thought so high-
ly of Senator Martin’s knowledge
of state government, his dedi-
cation, integrity and experience
that he appointed him Secretary
of State in 1963. The Governor
reappointed him to the post in
1965.
Born March 13. 1916, in Hills-
boro, Martin attended public
schools in his hometown, later
attending the University of Tex-
as Law School. He enlisted in
the U. S. Coast Guard during
World War II and served until
the end of the war. Returning
to Hillsboro, he launched a care-
er of public service—a career

Mrs. Pratt was born near
Ferris. She was a member of
the Red Oak Church of Christ.
Survivors include four sons,
Clyde, Vern and Edwin Pratt,
all of Red Oak, and Jay Pratt
of Ferris; two daughters, Mrs.
E. T. Goodloe and Mrs. Ruby
Evans, both of Red Oak; two
sisters, Mrs. Carl H. Robinson

dy of Weatherford; 12 grand-
children and 12 great grand-
children.

Paul Grafton on three charges
—aggravated assault on a child,
disturbing a public worship

Highway 45 Gap
In Navarro Co.
To Be Finished
Contractors, State Highway
department and law enforce-
ment officers have called signals
for the beginning of construction
of the final Navarro county seg-
ment of Interstate Highway 45.
No. 45 also serves Ellis Coun-
ty.
Barricades will go up early
next week on the 9-mile seg-
ment from Richland to a point
two miles south of Streetman,
it was announced at a pre-con-
struction safety hearing at the
Highway Department Office
here.
A mid-1968 finish date was es-
timated for the four-lane divid-
ed, access-controlled highway,
to be built at a total cost of $4,-
772,342.
The contractors, R. W. Mc-
Kinney and T. L. James of
Nacogdoches and Ruston, La.,
have 400 working days in which
to complete the mammoth pro-
ject, during which they must
also handle traffic, build de-
tours and other necessary jobs
in connection with it.

that his spanned 20 years. On
January 17, he became a candi-
date for the office of Attorney
General of Texas. During his
tenure in the Texas Senate,
Martin served on virtually every
standing Senate committee, hold-
ing such key posts as chairman
of finance and vice chairman of
state affairs and rules. He was
a member of the Legislative
Budget Board for nine years,
Chairman of Contingent Ex-
pense for six years, and chair-
man of local and uncontested
bills for 10 years. Martin was
twice chairman of special legis-
lative committees to study pro-
blems of the aging in Texas and
served as chairman of the Gov-
ernor’s Committee on Aging
from 1959 to 1963.
Martin received the Distin-
guished Service Award of the
Dallas Council of Social Agenci-
es in recognition of his outstand-
ing leadership on behalf of the
state’s aged citizens and merit
awards from the Texas Society
on Aging and from the Texas
Nursing Home Association. The
Texas Hospital Association hon-
ored Martin in 1963 by making
him an honorary member.
Martin’s native Hillsboro gave
him its highest accolade in 1960
when he was named “Hillsboro’s
Man of the Year.”
Martin is no "head-in-the-
clouds” legislator. His back-
ground as farmer, banker, cot-
ton ginner and lawyer served as
practical, down-to-earth influenc-
es throughout his legislative
career.
Martin believed during his
Senate tenure—as he does to-
day—that sound, progressive
government can be obtained with
prudence and efficiency.
During Martin’s 14 years in
the Senate he was the author
of such major legislation.
Mr. Martin is married to the
former Margaret Ann Mash of
Brandon in Hill County. They
are the parents of three chil-
dren, Sherry. 21, a student at
the University of Texas; Jim,
19, a student at Southwest State
College, San Marcos; and Nancy,
12, a student in Austin’s public
schools. Martin has been an elder
in the First Presbyterian Church
of Hillsboro for 17 years. He is
a former member of the Council
of Mid-Tex Presbytery; a former
president of the Hill County Bar
Association; a former director
of the Texas Ginners Association;
a member of the Lions Club; the
American Legion, and Texas
State Bar.
