How about supporting tonight’s project
of a worthy Ennis civic organization—the
Bathing Beauty Contest of the Optimist
Club.
This is the first such feature of the local
joy It-and Encourage the Club
selecting Miss Ennis Optimist to participate
then in the contest held by the Waxahachie
club in recent years and the clubmen are
hoping for a sizable turn-out for it.
It will be quite interesting, to be sure, as
participants will be a group of Ennis’ lovely
girls, for which it is noted.
The occasion is given for the purpose of
club—and, if she wins, she’ll go on to up-
per-level competition.
Now there is no admission charged, but
the club will be grateful for any contribu-
tions made by those in the audience toward
the expenses of holding the feature here
tonight.
If possible, why not arrange to attend
and show appreciation of activities of a
wide-awake club?

played August 5th, last night.

"On July 18, 1966, the Citi-
zens Group for Better Govern-
ment was not informed of the
called meeting of the City Com-
mission by any of the commis-
sions, city employees, or any one
else until one of the interested
group found the notice in the
Ennis Daily News after 5 p.m. At
this meeting it is stated that we
furnished none of the things
which we were required to do.
The few of us who were present
at this meeting due to the fact
that we had no opportunity to
inform our group of this meeting
earlier in the day were neither
recognized or asked if we had
these things. We were asked to
furnish three items, an estimate
of the cost of moving the gin,
the verification of the right of
Mr. Ervin Glaspy to act in be-
half of Mr. James Kemp of Dal-
las in giving the right-of-way
over his land, and a letter or
statement from C. A. Bishop giv-
ing the right-of-way over his
land.
“The directors of the gin were
at this meeting and presented
to the city commission their es-
ones of our group who were pre-
sent did have with them the
letter from Mr. Kemp as re-
quired, and C. A. Bishop was pre-
sent to offer the city any form
of assurance that his part of the
right-of-way would be donated.
The Citizens Group for Better
Government still has in its files
this letter, but we were never
recognized nor asked by any of
the commission if we did or did
not have them. It was the state-
ment of Mayor Fallen that there
had been considerable discussion
by the commission and it was
assumed that the cost of right of
way along Clay street would cost
twice as much as that along Pres-
ton Street, even though in the
routing over Clay Street there
was to be a gift of some 4,000
feet of right-of-way.
“As to the charge of the City
Commission that this routing was
changed at the time the School
Board met with the City Com-
mission to discourage Clay Street

read Oilers 1 — Optimists 1
through the fourth inning of
play.
Ronnie Honza led off the
Optimist fifth with a walk. Mike
Brown followed with a two-run
home run to end their scoring
for the night and the year. The
225-ft. blast cleared the Henry
Oil & Gas sign in left field.
Star came up with a run in
the sixth frame but fell one run
short of the Champion Optimists.
Chuck Bohall reached safely on
an error, stole second and third,
and scored on a bunt by Rusty
Rudd. Bohall and Johnny Taylor
had the two hits for the Oilers.
Honza, Brown, Mansfield, Rober-
son, Joe Strunc, and Paul Lamb
collected 8 hits for the Optimists.

being used as a thoroughfare
through the High School campus
there was nothing at this time to
indicate that any plans were to
move the routing of Highway 34
from Clay Street, but only to
establish a north-south thorough-
fare . If the necessity of one-way-
ing Preston Street was done a
little more than a year ago to
alleviate the traffic congestion
as stated by our Commission
would it not be utter chaos at
this time to propose that we try
to make this a north-south ex-
pressway.
“The Citizens for Better Gov-
ernment are unaware of any
laws they may have violated in
forming our group. It has always
been our opinion that this was
the American way for Govern-
ment to form and present any-
thing to the governing body. In
forming our group if
Mr. C. W. Johnso n would
have found time he
would have been at our first
meeting and found that when we
formed we agreed that the rout-
ing of Highway 34 was only the
beginning and not the only city
project of which we were inter-
ested. We made a special effort
to get him to attend this meeting
so he and the others would be
aware of our intentions. We do
not intend this to be our only
objective, but to continue to see
that the citizens of Ennis are
represented as to their wishes
and votes and not to have their
business attended to by the City
Commission as it has been done
in the past. We would like to say,
as The Citizens Group for Better
Government, that regardless of
the routing finally chosen for
South Highway 34 we intend to
remain an organized group to
try and better the City of Ennis.
At the conclusion of the state-
ment by Mr. Bishop there was a
questions-and-answers period in
which a number engaged. In re-
sponse to one, "If the city re-
mains adamant about Highway
34 entering on Preston?” Mr.
Bishop reminded, "The Highway
Department will have a public
hearing here in Ennis.” Charles
Brockman told of ease with
which he obtained signatures for
a petition for 34 to go on the
Clay Street route and added
"I didn’t hear a good word for
the city government.” Mr. Bis-
hop said that in talking with a
paving man he received a “guess-
timate” that all unpaved streets
of the city could be given one-
inch paving for $478,000. Secre-
tary Charles Havens urged all to
ask questions thay might have
“as I don’t want anybody to go
out and say they got half-truths
here.” Mr. Novotny said, to those
attending, “I’d like for you to
ask the city who changed the
routing from Clay Street.”
Ronnie Honza pitched the two-
hitter for the Optimists while
Chuck Bohall went all the way
for the Oilers. Player of the
game honor goes to Ricky Rob-
erson.
