Some 80 Huntsville Hornet athletes showed up for the
opening day of football practice, and according to the Hunts-
ville item, "to begin what could be their most successful
campaign since 1961.” The Hornets, who are expected in
most circles to give the Brenham Cubs their stiffest test for
District 10-3A North Zone title honors, are looking for i
improvement in an already impressive backfield which re-
turns hard-runnin, fullback Carl Spencer and halfbacks Bar-

Texas All-Star game, playing cornerback on defense and
alternating plays on offense.
Last year the only two losses Alabama absorbed during the
regular season were 10-9 and 10-8 decisions to Tennessee
and Mississippi, both of which may have gone the other way
if the Crimson Tide had possessed a gifted field goal kicker.
To make sure it doesn't happen again, head mentor Bear

However, when the league coaches met at the Coaching
School in Dallas, they chose Angleton to take the marbles...
Ken Goessler and Riley Plant, manager and coach of this
year's Brenham Senior Little League All-Stars, received a
much-appreciated, sincere letter of commendation fromo
house speaker Gus Mutscher, who commended them for
putting in many long hours of work with the boys, among other
kind words.
A remembered quote from Texas A4M head coach Gene
Stallings: "When a prospective player comes up here and the
band strikes up The Aggle War Hymn and it doesn't do any-
thing for him, we don’t want him. It’s the same way with you
news folks, if this performance by the Singing Cadets doesn’t
do anything for you, I don’t care if you ever write anything
good about us or not.”
The occasion came after the Singing Cadets had entertain-
ed a large group of writers and their wives attending the
annual Maroon and White spring training game. While the
Aggle head mentor 'had a twinkle in his eye when he said it,
there was no doubt he meant it. The Singing Cadets are
truly a talented group, one which this writer hopes someone
would invite down here. We’d probably have to stand in line
for their services, but it would be worth waiting on.
Two Fellows Names Hill
A couple of guys named Hill made some interesting com-
ments recently. Dave Hill, who has made $ 133,000 so far this
year and is the second-leading money winner on the golf tour, "

lived golf since I was nine years old so it’s always been my
life,* he said. "Nothing else interests me.I have a wife and

SOMETHING I DIDN’T KNOW UNTIL NOW: Bill Howton,
the former All-Everything for Rice and the Green Bay
Packers, with whom he started playing in 1952, is now a most
talented softball pitcher at the age of 38. Last weekend he
did his bit to help Messiah Lutheran of Houston win the
state Texas Amateur Athletic Federation softball tournament
held in Austin. The former pass catcher deluxe has been
burling the sphere every summer since 1950.
Baseball Pitchers And Things
Claude Raymond, the relief pitcher with the Atlanta
Braves, is a native Canadian and when he went in to relieve
for the first time in Montreal he received a thunderous
five-minute ovation.
‘‘I didn’t know what to do,” he said. "So I just stood there1
and shook.”
Sam McDowell, the strikeout artist with the Cleveland
Indians, says he knows this year’s ball is livelier than last
year's. "I can tell when I take batting practice because I’ve
hit home runs one-handed.”
Thirty five years ago when Lefty Gomez won 26 games
with the New York Yankees, He too was certain he held a
lively ball.” ‘‘I could feel the rabbit’s heart beat,’ the for-
mer pitching character said.
