Nationalists Regain
Hainan Optimism
TAIPEI, Formosa, April 21. —
Hainan dispatches boasted but Chi-
nese Nationalists here still sweated
today over the fate of the South
China island invaded Monday by
Reds. A
There was little fresh news. One
thing seemed certain: Nationalist
and Chinese Communist troop, for
the fifth straight day were locked
in a fierce struggle for the big
island 10 miles off the South China
coast.
One dispatch quoted a Hainan
defense headquarters spokesman:
“We are going to announce a
great victory soon. If you want to
make some money, stock up on
firecrackers’ to celebrate. ,
in Hong Kong, the independent

(The Communist Ta Kung Po, in
a Canton dispatch which told of
southwest of Holhow. The Reds
said they killed or wounded 200
Nationalists and captured 2,000.)
The Nationalists said 1,000 Bed
prisoner, were paraded Wednes-
day through Holhow streets.
Some prisoner, were quoted as
saying the Red timetable railed
for landing 50,000 troops by the end
of April.
Observers In Taipei feared that
if Holhow to captured or even iso-
lated the Nationalists might lose
control of Hainan Strait, the 10-
mile stretch of water leading to
mainland China. Then the Reds
would be able to pour in reinforce-
ments at will ,
This also would deprive the Na-
tionalists of their main Hainan air
base. The only other important air
field there is located at Sanya
(Samah) on the southern coast.
But retired U. S. Maj. Gen.
Claire L. Chennault’s civil air
