Questions on Debt Problems
Of Men Entering Service Aired
By JAMES MARLOW
WASHINGTON, Jan. 11. WH Here
are some questions and answers
about the debt problems of men
called into military service.
The answers here come from
government experts in this field:
Rent—
Suppose you're called into serve
ice and find, because your mill-
taty pay is less than you made m
a civilian, that you can't keep on
paying the same rent tor your fam-
ily. is the family thrown out?
You get some protection under
the law, but only if the civilian
rent you paid was tern than $80 a
month If it was over $80, you get
no protection. So this deals only

then not unless the judge says he
can throw your family out.
The judge can do a number of
things: Let your family stay on in-
definitely, let the family stay on
three months or longer before
letting the landlord put them
out, or tell the armed forces to
set aside some of your pay every
month to pay the landlord some,
if not all, the rent. L
A lease on a house or apartment
or business place.
You can break the lease by not-
dying the landlord you're going
into uniform but, unless the land-
lord is willing, the lease can’t be
ended until so days after the next
rent payment is due.
In some cases a landlord might
think breaking the team m soon
would work a hardship on him. For
example if he spent a lot in dee-
orating the place.
such a cam he might so to
court. If the judge thinks the land-
lord would suffer a hardship by
such a fast lease - break, he ean
order the team to stay in effect
longer than “30 days after the next
payment is due."
Mortgages—
If you're in service and say you
can’t keep up the mortgage pay-
ments. the mortgagor can't do any-
thing about it unless he first goes
in court and asks a judge for help.
BRIDGE
By OSWALD JACOBY
Written for NBA Service a
One reason some bridge players
don’t progress very far is that they
forget the problems of a.declarer
when they happen to be defending,
and visa versa. Fee example,
probably every experienced player
has been fused by the problem that
confronted South in the hand shown
today. However, very few defend-
ers would have the imagination to
create this problem for declarer.
west opened the jack of dia-
monds, and South won with the
king. It is hard to see at first how
South can possibly toes this con-
tract, but it was all reasonable
enough. ______

The judge cam:
1. Order the mortgagor to re-
turn to you all the payments you've
already made and then foreclose on
the property. This might happen in
the case of a man who hasn't paid
much on the mortgage
2. Postpone the whole case so
long as he the judges, wishes.
3. Try to work out an agreement
satisfactory to both sides.
4. Declare that the serviceman
doesn't have to make any more
I payments until he gets out of serr

she admitted she had been “taken ‘
