Civilization Harms Trees,

By HAL BOYLE
NEW YORK, March 30. un—If

doing to trees?
Well, they're having trouble# too
—according to a man who claims
to be the nation’s oldest active tree

every time he met a white oak.
After climbing thousands of
trees—and tumbling from a few-

isn't particularly dangerous. But
he once spent five months in s
hospital after he fell on a stub.
Another time his foot got caught
in a loop of rope as a heavy dead
limb was being lowered. "I rode
right up the trunk of that tree on
