Ballinger Tot Reaches to Hug
Father, Tumbles From Auto

Two-year-old Diane Cockrell was
In Hendrick Memorial Hospital this
Christmas Eve as the result of
her sudden desire to bug her daddy
as the family was traveling along
the Ballinger-Abilene highway Sun-
dr aferrnon.
Diane fell from the car, which
was traveling about 55 miles an
hour, when the rear door swung
open as she stood on tiptoes be-
tween the auto seats, reachtag to
p her arms around her father’s
neck.
The father, Richard Cockrell,
pulled the car to a stop when
he noticed the door open and heard
screams from Shirley, his 15-year-
old daughter, and Dickie, 4-year-
old son, who were riding to the
back seat with the baby.
As Cockrell looked back he saw
Diane on the highway with cars
approaching from each direction.
Mrs. Cockrell, who was sitting
beside her husband, forgot she
was holding three-months-old Peg-
gy Lee to her lap She jumped
from the car, then fainted, falling
into the arms of a passerby who
had seen the trouble and stopped.
Even as she fell, Mrs. Cockrell kept
hold on the infant.
Shirley was the first of the fami-
ly to reach Diane When Mrs
Cockrell was revived, the family
sped to Hendrick Memorial Hospi-
tal.
Examination revealed the child
suffered no fractures to the fall,
but had lacerations on her fore-
head, a deep cut on her lip and a
kidney injury.
The Cockrell family was en route
from Ballinger to visit relatives in
Abilene. The accident happened
near Tuscola.

DOCTOR REMOVES
OFFENDING COIN
Early Sunday morning, Dav-
id. 4-year-old son of Mr. and
Mrs. Herbert C. Wilson, 850
Vine St., got his hands on a
dime.
He put it in his mouth and
accidentally sucked in into his
windpipe. His mother took him
to Hendrick Memorial Hospi-
tal. At 10:30 a. m. five min.
utes after a physician started
probing with a bronchoscope,
the offending coin was removed
from the lad's bronchial tube.
David was dismissed and
taken home, apparently little
the worse for his experience

Jailbirds Free
For Holiday
Twelve city prisoners were re-
leased from jail Monday morning
for Christmas.
The prisoners released were
serving time or awaiting trial on
charges of drunkenness. Two re-
mained in jail, one for investiga-
tion of burglary and one who had
been sentenced on an assault caae.
Judge A. K. Doss, who released
them, admonished them for drink-
ing. "If you'd just let that first
drink alone, you wouldn’t have any
trouble. Going out and getting
drunk is debasing the very idea
and spirit of Christmas,” said
Judge Doss.
“Even, in biblical days,” Judge
Does pointed out, "people were
warned about strong drink. He
added, however, that “They didn't
have whisky or bay rum or any
of those modern drinks."
Judge Does told the prisoners,
assembled in Monday morning’s
Corporation Court, “As evidence of
good will, all your sins are forgiv-
en, and you will be released.”
