From Navy
Dorman N. Farmer, 25,geologist
with Robinson-Puckett Drilling Co.
will leave Abilene the first of Jan-
uary for active duty with the
Navy. .
Farmer, World War II veteran,
and Lieutenant (JG) in the Naval
Reserve, was present at the Bikini
atom bomb explosions in July,
1946. .
He was discharged Oct. 26, 1946,
and graduated from the Universi-
ty of Texas in January, 1950, in ,
“HeM been with Robinson-Puck-
ett since that time.
A member of Abilene’s Naval
Reserve unit. Organized Surface
Division 8-96, Farmer was group
officer- for Group Two, and met
weekly, with the unit
He will report to Treasure Is-
land, Calif. Jan. 8 for six weeks of
damage control school, then will
report to the USS Pine Island, AV
12, the same type ship he eerved
on during World War II.
He was educated by the Navy at
Louisiana Tech and Columbia Uni-
versity, New York City, until July.
1945, when he was assigned to the
USS Teal. .
Later, he was assigned to the
USS Cumberland Sound, AV 17.
which participated in "Able” and
“Baker” Bikini atomic tests.
He witnessed the first explosion
from 17 miles out and the second
explosion from six miles out
A graduate of Abilene High
School in 1943 where he played
basketball for two years, the young
officer is unmarried. He lived with
his grandmother, Mrs. O. C. Shel-
ton and sisters Virginia Ann and
Gloria Mae McCullough at 1781
