GIRDLE FIGHT
Plea for Corset
Ban Stirs up
Fashion Row
By DOROTHY ROE
To girdle or not to girdle?
That is the question at present
arousing heated controversy in the
salons of fashion.
It started when designer Charles
James announced the other day
that the female form looks better
uncorseted.

The Rev. David Binkley. Meth-

at the double ring rites.
The bridegroom is the son of
Mrs. Ben Dortch. 002 Sycamore.
The couple exchanged vows
standing before a mantle which
was centered with a basket of
blue daisies, yellow gladioluses and
white stock. Candelabra with blue
tapers and floor baskets of yellow
gladioluses and white stock com-
pleted the decorations.
The bride was given in mar-
riage by her father. She wore an

yellow roses, a black velvet cloche
with jeweled veil...

Karla Griffin, daughter of
“What about the girl with the
rubber tire middle? What about
the lady with middle-aged spread?
What about the one with the droop-
ing bustline and the flopping hips?
If you want to see the female form
in its natural state, just take a
look at Coney Island on a hot Sun-
day afternoon. You’ll have to ad-
mit it usually looks far from di-
vine. without a little restraint ”
Says Lilly Dache, who has added
bras to her growing list of hats,
dresses, gloves and hosiery:
"You have to wear a foundation
to achieve the uncorseted look.
That’s just another of those little
deceptions which all smart women
practice.
“Nobody wants to look stiff and
girded, like the matrons of a gen-
eration or so ago. The natural look
is what we are striving for—but
it can’t be too natural or it looks
awful.”
Says Adele Simpson, famous for
her svelte, sophisticated dress and
suit designs:
“I can't agree with Mr. James.
Every model in my showroom
wears a foundation, even if she’s a
size ten. I feel it is of the utmost
importance, for the sake of posture
as well as the figure. A judicious
amount of restraint is a good thing,
whether it applies to the figure,
the diet or the conversation.”
Then there is the final question
which the girls are firing at
James:
“If you don’t wear a girdle, how
are you going to keep your stock-
ings up?”
Y-TEEN GIRLS, about 100 of them, left early this morning
for their three-day camp at Buffalo Gap. Five of the camp-
ers, pictured above, are Dorothy Kesler and Betty Schoon-
over, first row left to right; and, back row, Jeanne Burns,
Mary Beth Barr and Beverly Wyatt. The Y-Teens are spon-
sored by the YWCA. (Staff photo)
