Mrs. Harwell told the DAR that
grading systems in some schools
provide a lack of competition.
"This produces the desire for con-
trolled security,” she declared,
"thus enslaving the minds of our
children.”
Revisions in the Magruder text-
book “American Government”
have been made, Mrs. Harwell re-
ported. She said the 1954 edition
is considered more “acceptable”
than earlier versions. She credited
the chairman at the DAR chapter
in Texarkana with those changes.
"Our resolution, asking that the
Magruder text be removed from
the Texas public schools, is still
in the hands of the State Board
of Education,” she reported. “It
will not be acted upon for an-
other year, when its adoption ex-
pires.”
Mrs. Harwell related that the
land out of a clear blue sky, how-
ever, when a safe lead is avail-
able.
One important thing to remem-
ber in a bridge game is that your
opponents are not very different
from yourself Your opponents
also like safe leads and dislike
unsafe leads.
When West led the seven of
hearts against South's slam con-
tract in today's band. South's first
reaction was one of disappoint-
ment. It was very unlucky for
him that West had decided to
lead a heart.
With any other lead. South
could easily win, draw trumps,
cash the ace of spades, and get
to the dummy to lead ths queen
of spades and let it ride. South
could afford to let the enemy
make the king of spades, thus ob-
taining all the discards he needs
for his losing hearts.
The opening heart lead forced
declarer to make an immediate
decision about the play of that
suit. Should he finesse the queen
or put up the aco of hearts?
After some thought. South de-
cided that West was not likely to
be making a dangerous lead away
from the king of hearts when he
had a safe club lead of some kind
available to him. If West didn't
have the king of hearts, there
could be no advantage in finess-
ing the queen.
Acting on this reasoning, de-
clarer won the first trick with
dummy's ace of hearts. He
cashed the ace of diamonds and
the ace of spades and returned to
dummy with a trump. His next
step was to lead the queen of
spades through, discarding a
heart when East played low.
West was able to win this trick
with the king of spades, but
couldn’t lead another heart. He

hopefully returned a club, but
South won with the ace, rutted a
club in dummy, and then discard-
ed his two remaining low hearts
on dummy 's top spades.
U South had finessed the queen
of hearts at the first trick, he
would have been defeated. East
would have taken the king of
hearts and returned the suit,
giving West an immediate ruff.
