Business Rise Maj 1
Temporary, Economist Says
"resurgent business activity” to
which, he said, administration fis-
cal policies may give added vigor.
Brown said some economists who
formerly believed the business up-
turn would come this summer or
fall now are "beginning to veer
to earlier dates ''
"Perhaps the turn around has
already begun," he said, but
WASHINGTON, un—The eagerly
awaited business upturn may have
arrived. Dr. Courtney S. Brown of
Columbia University said today,
but it may prove to be only a tem-
porary rally “in a longer period or
slack activity” lasting a year or
two.
Brown, dean of Columbia’s Grad-
uate School of Business, said in
remarks prepared for the U. S.
Chamber of Commerce convention
there are encouraging signs that
a revival “started a month or so
And a member of the Federal
Reserve Board of Governors, A.L.

there is increasing evidence of

added:
“There is no convincing evidence
that the incipient revival will be
more than an improvement of
several months’ duration. It could
turn out to be merely a ported of
(lability at present levels ...
"It may be more realistic to re-
gard the present prospect of im-
provement as a period of rally in
a longer period of slack activity.
If we are wrong, so much the
better.”
Was It Inventories?
Dean Brown questioned whether
the nine-month-old business sag
had been caused so directly by
the adjustment of overloaded busi-
ness inventories as most adminis-
tration officials have contended.
"The nation's economy may have
passed temporarily from a postwar
period of replenishment and expan-
sion to a period that could last
another year or two.

ROBERT H. (BOB* ROM
... announces candidacy
Ross Files
For Clerk
Robert H. (Bob* Ross, Taylor
County deputy sheriff, Tuesday au-
thorized The Reporter-News to
announce his formal candidacy for
district clerk subject to action of
the Democratic primary July 24.
Ross issued the following state-
ment:
TO THE VOTERS OF TAYLOR
COUNTY:
In making my formal announce-
ment as candidate for district
clerk, I would like to list my qual-
ifications for your consideration as
a candidate for that office.
I have been a permanent resi-
dent of Abilene since 1939 and a
resident of the county most of the
time since 1923 My home is at
1936 South 11th St.
I am married, and a member
of the First Methodist Church and
a local civic club.
As for my qualifications and abil-
ity to take care of the needs of
the office’ my experience consists
of 12 years as a bank clerk and
for the past few years as office
deputy in the sheriffs office, where
I am now employed.
Since the civil matters of the
sheriffs office are so closely re-
lated to those of the district clerk's
office, I have by necessity be-
come familiar with the duties of
that office.
I will appreciate your vote and
support in the July primary and
assure you that I will devote my
full time to the duties of the of-
fice in trying to serve you in a
courteous and efficient manner.
Respectfully yours,
ROBERT H. (BOB) ROSS
