When today's hand was played
in the national team champion-
chip a few weeks ago, it was
difficult for South to stay out of
trouble, to one room, the South
ployer got to four hearts and went
down one trick quickly and quietly
to the other room, as shown in the
diagram, South got to throe no-
trump and muffed his chance to
make that contract.
West opened the queen of
spades, and South properly al-
lowed him to hold the trick. West
continued with the jack of spades,
and South won with the king.
It was now clear that West had
a long spade suit, beaded by all
of the missing strength, since
otherwise he wouldn't have been
so eager to hammer away at
South's bad suit.

finessed dummy's queen. When
this held. South drew a sigh of
relief and cahsed the ace of dia-
monds. South had sighed too soon,
for this was a mistake.
West naturally played the king
of diamonds, and the next dia-
mond trick was won by East.

WASHINGTON —The Army to- st the contact by taking the rest
day issued a draft call for 23,000
men in December, the same num-
ber announced in each of the pre-
vious five months. ,
The new call brings to 1,835,430
the total number drafted or ear-
marked for induction since Selec-
tive Service was resumed in Sep-
tember, 1950.
Draft calls held at the 23.000
level from July, 1953, through
January, 1954. For five months
ending last June, the monthly
quotas dropped to 10.000, but rose
again in July to the current level.
First Aid Course
To Begin Thursday
First session of a standard Red
Cross first aid course is scheduled
to begin Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at
Fair Park School cafeteria. an-
nounces D. C. Musick, first aid
chairman of the Taylor County
American Red Cross Chapter.
The course will be taught by V.
D. Singleton of the city engineer-
ing department. Musick said. It is
sponsored by the Fair Park P-TA.
Persons interested in the course
have been asked to call the Red
Cross chapter house, phone 4-9185.
Classes will be held each Thurs-
day night, until the 22-hour course
is completed.
South knew that he had to lose
a diamond trick no matter how
favorably the suit might break.
(Even if you give West the king-
jack of diamonds, East will still
have 10-x-x and must make a
trick.) The important thing was
to lose the diamond trick to West
rather than to East in order to
avoid losing a total of four spade
tricks.
When the finesse of the queen
of diamonds succeeds, South must
lead a heart to his king and re-
turn another diamond towards the
dummy. West must play the king,
of course, and he should be allow-
ed to hold the trick. Now West
can take only two further spade
tricks, but be cannot prevent de-
clarer from winning the contract
with three hearts, four diamonds,
a spade, and a club.
It is quite true that West might
have more than two diamonds,
but this wouldn’t alter the situa-
tion. If West is able to play a
low diamond on the second round
of that suit, dummy can play the
ace and give the third trick to
West's king.
If West puts up the king of
diamonds on the second round,
he is allowed to hold the trick.
This play makes sure that West
wins the only defensive diamond
trick.

She Says Hubby
Broke Gun Stocks
In Beating Her
FORT ScorT, Kan (n—A
28-
year-old mother told authorities
yesterday her husband whipped
her with sticks, gun butts and a
rubber hose and chained her in
bed with him at night.
Mrs. Doris Blackmore was, hos-
pitalised in serious condition. She
is the mother of five children
ranging in age from 2 to 1.
Her 33-year-old husband Cecil
pleaded innocent at his arraign-
ment to charges of assault with
intent to do bodily harm. He was
held in county jail after failing to
post $5,000 bond.
In a signed statement, Mrs.
Blackmore said the beatings took
place over a two-month period,
"sometimes twice a day.” She
said her busband twice broke gun
stocks in beating her over the head
and shoulders.
Undersheriff Claude Emrick said
Blackmore orally admitted beating
his wife but denied breaking the
gunstocks on her. The officer
quoted Blackmore, a farmer, as
saying he was jealous of his wife
but did not explain why. Other
investigators reported they found
no support for such a motive.
Mrs. Blackmore accused her
busband of keeping her chained
“to his body every night with a
cow chain” all last week.
She said she did act notify
authorities because she feared for
her life. Her brothers reported the
beatings to police.
