TEXARKANA, Tex., u-Texark-
ana Junior College is to field a
football team next year for the
first time since 1937.
Regents voted Monday to ac-
cept an offer of $15,000 from a
boosters club to finance football
in 1955. Sports were voted out at
the college 14 years ago because
of lack of support.
President H.W. Stillwell said a
coach will be hired soon. Texark-
ana JC will join the Texas Junior
College Conference.

Southwest Conference teams
broke evens again Tuesday night
and challenge three Oklahoma
quints Wednesday night in inter-
sectional basketball warfare.
Previously undefeated Texas
Christian—the conference’s cham-
pionship favorites-bowed Tuesday
night to the St. Louis University
Billikens, losing a 75-58 decision
before 5,820 fans. In the other
game Rice's Owls put on an of-
fensive burst in the second half to
smother Lamar Tech's Cardinals
91-74.
In Wednesday night's battles
Texas A&M plays Tulsa’s Hurri-
cane at College Station, Arkansas
challenges Oklahoma City U. at
Oklahoma City, and Texas meets
the Oklahoma Aggies at Stillwater.
Rice set a new scoring record
for its gym at Houston in whipping
the stubborn Cardinals. The pre-
vious high for the Owl court was
90 points Rice scored in last sea-
son's final game in defeating
Southern Methodist.
Lamar Tech stayed in th- lead
until the middle of the sect half.
But Bobby Brashear broke a 58-58
deadlock there and the Owls pulled
ahead. Brashear scored 16 points
for Rice while his teammate,
Monte Robicheaux, scored 18 and
Joe Durrenberger tallied 21 to lead
the Owl scoring.
However, Lamar's clever guard
-George Gordon-led the night's
scorers with 24 points for the Car-
dinals. It was the second win of
the young season for Rica over
the Redbirds.
At St Louis, the Billikens de-
pended on team depth and defense
to hand the Homed Frogs their
fist loss of the season.
The Bills clamped a tight de-
fense on the Christians and held
them to one field goal and two
free throws in the first 8% min-
utes of the second half.
The Frogs moved within five
points of St. Louis three times, but
could never quite catch up.

lose for winning. They plugged
along with their single wing for-
mation, an unfamiliar style in their
part of the country, squeaking past
Baylor by a point and three other
rivals by a touchdown. First thing
they knew, they were listed right
up with the big boys.
What's more, they stayed there.
Even though they last two games,
Arkansas finished as conference
champion and Cotton Bowl entry
and took tenth piece to the final
Associated Press ranking poll .
This was listed as the season’s
biggest surprise by M of BB sports
writers and broadcasters who re-
turned replies to this question in
the annual Associated Press post-
season football questionnaire.
Three others split their votes be-
tween Arkansas and other teams
and four listed the Porkers second.
The losers who surprised the ex-
ports were Alabama, Michigan
State, Iowa, Texas and Pennsyl-
vania.
