Our community owes its city authorities
a debt of gratitude for being deeply inte-
rested, always, in its interests in the mat-
ter of a permanent and adequate water
supply, for, we are told by experts, that
is something which will be a great problem
for many localities in the year’s ahead.
Our mayor, city commission and city
manager, upon invitation, attended a meet-
ing of the TRA Board yesterday at Kaufman,
and, so designated by the commission, City
Manager Kenneth E. Smith made a fine
presentation concerning Ennis request for
10 per cent additional Lake Bardwell water,
which would bring the figure here to 55 per
cent.
The reasons are brought out in a report
of the presentation elsewhere today and
they are quite logical.
All the way through, this matter has
been well handled and it looks quite favor-
able for our receiving the requested amount.
If that’s the way it turns out, we’ll be
mighty proud of it, sooner or later, all right.

Editor’s Note: Below are ques-
tions now being asked at draft
boards. The answers are by
Colonel Morris S. Schwartz,
State Selective Service Director,
209 W. 9th Street, Austin, Texas
78701. He will welcome your
questions.
Q—Can a person be deferred
from service for a traffic viola-
tion?
A—A record of traffic viola-
tion has nothing to do with de-
ferment. A man could be reject-
ed for service by the Depart-
ment of Defense if the offense
were serious enough. A man is
not required in his classification
questionnaire to list convictions
for minor traffic violations.
Q—Suppose a man turns in his
draft card, then has a change of
heart, and wants to enlist. What
does he have to do?
A—A person does not necas-
sarily have to have a “draft
card” to enlist, but his failure to
have in his possession his “draft
card” (either his Registration

Certificate, or his current Notice
of Classification) is a violation of
the law. Any man who has aban-
doned either of these and wants
them back should request his
local board to return or replace
them.
Q—May a person classified in
Class I-Y try to enlist in the Na-
tional Guard?
A—Yes. It’s possible he may
be found acceptable by the Na-
tional Guard, but not likely.
Q—I entered law school in the
fall of 1967. I’ve been told the
draft board can only give me this
one year of deferment. Is that
right?
A—Yes. A student entering
training in this profession for
his first year in the fall of 1967
can only be allowed one year

This is the time of year that start looking for various docu-
ments now and bring them with
many people are considering re-
tirement. They have many ques-
tions concerning their Social
Security benefits.
Here are some of the ques-
tions we are frequently asked by
people anticipating retirement,
says the Social Security admin-
istration:
Q.—I don’t have a birth certi-
ficate to show I’m of retirement
age.
Does this mean I will not be able
to receive social security bene-
fits?
A. No. If a birth record does
not exist, you will need to pre-
sent other evidence of your age.
If you were baptized as an infant
and church records exist, you
may obtain a baptismal certifi-
cate to prove your age. If no
baptismal record exists, you may
present other evidence such as
school records, census records,
insurance policies, children’s
birth certificates, licenses that
show your age, etc. We will as-
sist you in obtbaining the neces-
sary evidence, but you might

you when you file for retirement
benefits.
Q. My accountant prepared an
extra copy of my 1967 tax re-
turn and told me to give it to
you when I file for my retire-
ment. Why does Social Secu-
rity want my tax return?
A. It will take several months
after you have filed your 1967
tax return for your self-employ-
ment income to be posted to
your social security record.
Therefore, any self-employed
person who expects to file for
social security this year should
have an extra copy of his 1967
tax return prepared to be used
as evidence of his earnings in
1967. This enables the Social
Security Administration to give
you credit for these earnings
immediately, instead of waiting
until the return has been pro-
cessed.
Q. Recently, I cut down on the
hours I work each week. I am al-
most 65 years old and I plan
to keep on working. I wondered
if I could get any social security.
A. The law has been changed
so that people can earn up to
$1,680 each year and still receive
benefits. You may be entitled to
some benefits even if you are
earning more than that amount.
You should telephone or stop
by the social security office for
more complete information.
