Many Think Ennis Due to Become City

You Can Tell - It’s Tell City I
A number of observers from out-of-town,
people with whom we come into contact
from time to time, declare that they truly
believe Ennis some day will be a city.
One businessman who is often here made
that prediction just the other day.
“Ennis has what it takes for a real city—
and that’s what it will be some day; watch
what I tell you."’
Incidentally, we were interested in some-
thing Thomas M. Goodfellow, president of
the Association of American Railroads, had
to say, as he noted the country’s rapidly-
increasing population: That this will neces-
sitate the building of 20 to 25 new cities
of 100,000 people every year remaining
in this century.
Location, ready availability of facilities—
and more, too, if need arises—these and
numerous others are among the reasons
why Ennis should enjoy fine growth, even
though gradual, as many anticipate.

Review
It was exercise night in the
Texas League Thursday with all
teams engaged in doublehead-
ers. The Arkansas Travelers got
some fun out of theirs by beat-
ing Amarillo twice while the
others were splitting their twin
bills.

Arkansas defeated the Giants
7-1 and 2-1 behind the six-hit
pitching of Jerry Reuss in the
opener and the four-hitter toss-
ed by Andy Martin in the night-
cap.
The two triumphs moved the
Travelers four games in front of
Memphis and Shreveport in the
Eastern Division.
Albuquerque, Western Divis-
ion leader, bounced back from
a 7-5 opening game loss to
Shreveport to beat the Braves
8-1 as Bill Sudakis hit a grand-
slam home run.
Memphis whipped San Antonio
6-2 after the Missions’ Dean
Burk had blanked the Blues 1-0
on two hits in the first game.
Joe Overton of El Paso also
tossed a two-hit, 1-0 shutout
after the Sun Kings had dropped
their opener to Dallas-Fort Wor-
th 8-7.
HOUSTON-New York Mets’
relief pitcher Ron Taylor seldom
fails to do the job when his team
calls on him.
He picked up his sixth save
of the season last night as the
Mets edged the Houston Astros,
3-1.
Taylor, a former Astro, came
on in the eighth to rescue Mets
starter Don Cardwell and pre-
serve the victory. The Astros
had a run in and two on when
Taylor forced pinchhitter Dick

“The Girl

Vice President Humphrey de-
nies he is a status quo candi-
date. And—in an apparent slap
at his rival for the Democratic
nomination—he said he does not
seek the presidency to let its
powers lie useless. Senator Eu-
gene McCarthy has spoken out
for de-centralizing some of the
powers of the presidency. Hum-
phrey’s remarks are in a speech
prepared for the North Dakota
Democratic convention. McCar-
thy also is slated to speak to the
North Dakota Democrats today.
On the Republican side, Gov-
ernor Nelson Rockefeller will be
campaigning today in Nebraska.
Pennsylvania Governor Raymond
Shafer—who already has come
out for Rockefeller—said today
he thinks Richard Nixon would
make a fine president. But he
emphasized Rockefeller has a
better chance to be elected.
Nixon is in New York today with
no campaign activities schedul-
ed. And American Independent
Party candidate George Wallace
will be in Maryland and Massa-
chusetts.

Instead of regulating the air-
ways—the FCC has become the
most lethargic commission in
Washington. It eats out of the
hand of industry and takes its
cue from network spokesman
Sol Taishoff—publisher of
Broadcasting Magazine.
President Johnson so far has
appointed two FCC commission-
ers one of them—Nick Johnson,
a live wire; the other—Jerry
Wadsworth, a charming misfit
who goes to sleep in commis-
sion meetings. On one occasion,
all the commissioners had left
the hearing room when Com-
missioner Ken Cox thought-
fully walked back to wake up
his peacefully sleeping col-
league. Otherwise Wadsworth
would have continued snoozing
in an otherwise empty room.
President Johnson is a close
pal of Dr. Frank Stanton, head
of CBS—while NBC’s Gen. Da-
vid Sarnoff has, been a frequent
White House guest. It will be
interesting to see whether the
President goes against his old
friends on Madison Avenue by
appointing a really forthright
FCC commissioner.
TV Crime Is Profitable
If the FCC should acquire
courage — it could go far to
discourage crime and violence
on the home screen by a very
simple expedient — limiting
profits. Crime and violence are
featured only because they win
high audience ratings and at-
tract big-paying sponsors.
We have a letter from former
Sen. Clarence Dill of Washing-
ton—author oft h e Federal
Com munications Act of 1934
which created the FCC. Dill is
specific on this point.
“The commission has the pow-
er to limit the profits of radio
and TV stations,” writes the
Senator who wrote law giving
the FCC its power.
“The FCC has limited t h e
Yankees—“My Fair Lady,”
guitar company and an auto-
mated education company.
Radio Corporation of Ameri-
ca—according to its chairman,
Gen. Sarnoff—totaled record
sales in 1967 of $3,000,000,000-
of which NBC was responsible
fort .part. “I am happy to report
said Sarnoff—“that 1967 was
NBC’s most successful year in
sales and profits.”
The Storer Broadcasting
Company ,a profitable chain—
has acquired Northeast Airlines;
while RKO-General, another
wealthy combine—owns Fron-
tier Airlines.
RKO - General is so affluent
and so far-flung that the Jus-
tice Department finally brought
an antitrust suit against it. The
suit shows that RKO subsidiar-
ies operate 125 theatres, plus
community antenna TV in 29
communiteis, an extensive mic-
rowave business — and a bak-
ground music operation serving
the Southwest.

Supreme Court qutie recently
decided that the FCC has con-
trol of the telephone cables bus-

distributed. It is in the public
interest to stop this profiteering

Dill might have pointed out,
too—that the electric, utility
companies which are given per-
mits to build dams on Ameri-
can streams are limited by pul
lic utility commissions to 6 or 7
per cent. The airwaves are eas-
ier to harness, and the profits
fantastic. They are so fantastic
that the networks have trouble
finding outlets for their cash.
