BHS baseball team had solid year
BY KE RRY BARBOZA
™ Sports Editor
The season didn’t end quite
like the Boerne baseball team
would have hoped, as the squad
just missed out on advancing to
the postseason for the first time
in eight years, but there was still
plenty of excitement along the
way.
Boerne won it’s own five-team
tournament in late February,
beating three 5A squads in the
process, had two members share
“Player of the Week” honors,
reached the No. 1 spot in the
greater San Antonio area rank-
ings and even climbed into the
state’s top 10.
The team rolled to a 15-6
record in the preseason, but met
plenty of stiff competition once
the 27-4A campaign started.
Smithson Valley and Kerrville
dropped the Greyhounds to an
0-2 mark before BHS won its
homer to down the Hounds and
the Rangers rallied to erase a
four-run deficit against Boerne
late in the game.
With its back against the wall,
BHS went on to win its next
three games, avenging its loss to
Kerrville when Jason Davila
delivered a dinger to end the
game.
During its three-game winning
streak which improved the team
to 5-4, the Hounds defeated
Canyon and Fredericksburg for
the second time this year, setting
up its final contest of the season
with New Braunfels that proved
to be a must-win game for both
teams.
The winner would advance to
the playoffs, while the loser
would hang it up until next sea-
son.
Also, adding fuel to the fire
was the fact the Hounds

season at 20-11 and 5-5 in dis-

BHS baseball coach Bill
Miller said the team never gave
up despite the ups and downs
they experienced.
“These kids worked hard and
learned some life lessons,” he
said. “That’s one thing they’ll
always carry with them.”

More proof of her athleticism
comes from the fact she never

hurdler and anchored the mile
relay in Middle School, but once
she tried the 300 hurdles, she

Garza noted that he could
physically bench press 510
pounds, squat 650 pounds and
deadlift 700 pounds, but could-
n’t say no to beer and marijuana.
“It’s good to train the body and

you make moral decisions,” he
said after his talk. “There is

Heading into Austin, Bulk has

Kirby Seewald, the president
of Boerne’s FCA said Garza’s
message was right on target.
“He did an awesome job, it’s
stuff we can related to as high
school students,” she said. “He
was honest and humble and
really touched people.”
Garza, who speaks at roughly
200 schools and 50 prisons each
year, said that’s the type of feed-
back he usually gets.
“The No. 1 thing people tell
me is ‘you made me think,’” he
said. “The things I tell them
aren’t things you hear on MTV.”

organization that he developed a
friendship with Russ Book-

Bookbinder helped open the
