he trick is to plan ahead

“Losing weight is hard enough,
but keeping it off is the most dif-
ficult part... so how do you keep
the weight off?” That is the over-
whelming comment and e-mail
question in response to my last
two articles. I agree completely,
it is the hardest part, if you let it
be. This is what I do personally.
I hardly ever get on a weight
scale, it is so un-motivating and
my husband got tired of replac-
ing the window in the bathroom.
I use a wool silk-lined suit that
fits me like a glove as my gauge.
What do I mean by use? That
outfit, being wool and silk, does-
n’t give an inch and if it’s tight
when I put it on once a week, I
know what I must do.
My eating plan is very simple.
It goes like this ... I carry an
igloo filled full of healthy good-

and veggies in season are the
usual.
Sometimes on cold days I bring
hot soup or something healthy
from dinner the night before and
warm it up at my studio.
My days start at about 4 am. (I
have some very dedicated
clients) so I usually have part of
a cliff bar on the way there. After
my first client I get back in the
car at about 7 a.m. and have a

the day and don’t have much
time for any sit down breakfasts
or lunch. Cold grapes, a banana,
an apple, yogurt, energy bars cut
in three or four pieces (cliff bars
What could be better I ask you?

ished, at about 8 p.m.
When I get home I am exhaust-
ed. I have no more motivation
left so it would be easy for me to
just mow down on the nearest
temptation, if I didn’t plan
ahead.
There’s the trick - plan all
your meals ahead of time. Know
exactly what you are going to eat
all day just like you would your
appointments for the day.
Plan for the entire week, write
it down and stick to it. If you
know you have to eat out at
lunch or dinner, know what to
get that fits into your calorie
range.
You have to become an expert
on the calorie counts of foods to
keep in charge of your weight.
Then you can keep that gorging,
eat everything in sight, monster,
at bay. You will have to keep on
this regiment until you have your

igloo. My entire day consisted of Everybody’s different, too. It
all depends on how much activi-
ty you get during the day. My
base calorie intake to keep me at
115 pounds is about 1,300 calo-
ries of food intake (+).
That is if I do nothing except
lie in bed all day, or sit at a com-
puter, etc. Now I must factor in
my activity multiplier. I exercise
with my clients all day long but
it is not always that much exer-
tion so I add about 500 calories
of energy burned (-) to the 1300,
which equals 1800 calories.
That is for the week, but the
weekends I always splurge a bit
so I use the savings plan. I exer-
cise a little bit more every day or
I decrease my calorie intake, so
at the end of the week I have “
saved up” enough calories to
splurge without worry.
The Savings Plan for Healthy
Eating works because you fit it
into your lifestyle.

TDH offers precautions for hunters while out among the critters
‘ Thousands of Texas hunters
are taking to the woods and
fields to hunt deer, doves and
other animals, and they are not
alone. All manner of critters that
can carry diseases are out as
well, say officials with the Texas
Department of Health.
Hunters, along with campers
and hikers, are at risk of expo-
sure to diseases transmitted by
ticks, fleas and mosquitoes.
Many of these diseases begin
with flu-like symptoms such as
fever, chills, headache and body
aches that can worsen quickly.
West Nile virus is a mosquito-
borne illness new to Texas and
can cause encephalitis, which is
an inflammation of the brain.
Symptoms include intense
headache, high fever, nausea,
muscle tenderness, partial un-
consciousness and even coma.
In rare instances, death may
occur.
Another potential danger is
Lyme disease, the most frequent
diagnosed tick-borne problem in
the United States. Lyme disease
may result in skin lesions or
rashes, which, if left untreated,
may result in severe damage to
the joints, heart and nervous sys-
tem. Rocky Mountain spotted
fever also is spread by infected
ticks. It can crate a measles-like
rash and is fatal if not treated
quickly. Exposure to bacteria
that cause tularemia, yet another
tick-home disease, also can occur
by handling wild rabbit carcasses.
To protect against insect bites:
■ Use insect repellent contain-
ing DEET. Follow package direc-
tions carefully.
■ Stay on the trails and avoid
areas of overgrown brush and tall
grasses.
■ Wear protective clothing such
a s a hat, long-sleeved shirt and
long pants tucked into boots or
