Late TD propels Odem past Comfort
Mistakes prove Bi =====
costly for ‘Cats
BY KERRY Barboza
■ Sports Editor
SAN ANTONIO - Mistakes
and turnovers unraveled Com-
fort’s hopes of a state title Satur-
day inside the Alamodome
against Odem in state quarterfi-
nal action.
Comfort had four turnovers,
two of which led to Odem
touchdowns, allowing the Owls
to soar to a 20-13 victory and
advance to the 2A state semifi-
nals against Corrigan-Camden.
Odem only had to move the
ball 14 yards on two drives to
take advantage of those two
Comfort turnovers.
The first time, Odem recov-
ered at the Comfort 3-yard line
and scored three plays later. The
second time, it took the Owls
five plays to punch it in after re-
covering a fumble at the Com-
fort 11 to start the second half.
Odem’s second TD tied the
contest at 13-13 and gave the
Owls the momentum after Com-
fort had jumped out to a 13-0
lead in the first quarter.
"You can’t take anything away
from Odem, they came out to
play and had a good game plan,"
Comfort coach Paul Talbert
said. "They’re well coached and
very disciplined, but the bottom
line is we made too many mis-
takes."
CHS wasn’t the only one hav-
ing trouble holding onto the
ball, Odem was plagued by
three first-half turnovers, two of
which the ’Cats converted into
points.
Odem fumbled on its first play
from scrimmage, setting up a
Comfort score. Sergio Cisneros
capped the 50-yard, 8-play drive
with a one-yard plunge to put
CHS ahead 6-0.
Shane Jones recorded an inter-
ception two drives later which
allowed CHS to jump out to a
13-0 lead. This time the Bobcats
used a trick play to find the end
zone seven minutes into the
contest.

win
BHS boys, girls
cruise to victory
by Kerry Barboza
B Sports Editor
The Boerne boys hoopsters al-
most doubled up visiting Rock-
port-Fulton Saturday afternoon
at Boerne Middle School South.
BHS pulled out a 102-54 victo-
ry and improved to 2-4 on the
year.
Boerne boys coach Stan Leech
said his team was able to break
the century mark because they
were able to break the Rockport-
Fulton’s full-court, man-to-man
press and get some good looks at
the hoop.
"They played fast and we can
do that, that was the pace of the
game" Leech said. "We played
all 10 of our guys and they got
some good minutes. We had bal-
anced scoring."
Leech added it was good to
pull out a win after losing to
some very tough San Antonio
schools and starting the year at
1-4 start.
"It was one of those that we
needed," he said. "We needed a
little affirmation after our sched-

“(Odem is) well
coached and very
disciplined, but the
bottom line is we
made too many
mistakes.”
Paul Talbert
Comfort head coach
But the mistakes started to
catch up with Comfort. A Jones
28-yard touchdown run was
called back after a penalty on
the play. Four plays later, Com-
fort, who had driven the ball
down to the Odem 16-yard line,
threw a pass that looked to be
incomplete after the CHS re-
ceiver bobbled the ball and was
hit.
The referee ruled it a fumble
and the Owls recovered at their
own two-yard line with only 39
seconds left on the clock to
dodge a bullet.
Also in the first half, a Kucera
50-yard punt return that would
have given CHS the ball at the
Odem 20-yard line was wiped
out to due a penalty.
"A genre of just about every-
thing bad that could happen
happened, especially in the first
half," Talbert said. "It was a buf-
fet of screws-ups. With a break
or two we could have gone (into
halftime) with a two or three
touchdown lead, instead we go
up with a one touchdown lead
(13-7)."
With the contest knotted at 13-
13, Comfort went on two long
drives in the third that both
stalled. The ’Cats took the ball
from its 22 all the way to the
OHS 37, good for 41 yards, but
• couldn't get a first down on 4th-
' and-8.
The next time CHS had the
ball, they marched down the
field from their own 20-yard
line to the Owls’ 18, a 14-play
