J. BERKELEY, OF WA SHINGTON, TEXAS.
Letters Patent No. 85,783, dated January 12, 1869.
IMPROVED BALING-PRESS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.To all mhom it may concern :
Be it known that I, J. BERKELEY, of Washington,
in the county of Washington, and State of Texas, have
invented a new and useful Improvement in Presses;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable
others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this specification, in which-
Figure 1 represents a side elevation with parts broken
away, and
Figure 2 represents a horizontal section on the line
x x of fig, 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide an im-
proved portable press for pressing cotton, hay, and
other articles.
The filling and pressing-chamber is divided into two
parts, one of which is fixed to the wagon-frame, near
the front end, in a permanent manner. The other
part, to which the material is supplied to be pressed,.
and which is provided with the follower, is arranged
upon trunnions near the end of the wagon, and is
turned' up with the rear end down to be filled. When
filled it is restored to the level of the frame, and com-
municates with the fixed portion, into which the ma-
terial is forced by the follower, which is operated by a
windlass and cords working over pulleys properly ar-
ranged. The sides of the fixed portion are arranged
to open to discharge the bale.
A represents the frame of the press arranged upon
wheels for the purpose of transportation.
B and B' represent the pressing and filling-chambers,
the part B being fixed to the flame in a permanent
manner, and provided with swinging doors E on aebh
side.
The part B' is connected to tihe frame at E by hinges
or trunnious, and arranged to be turned on the same,
so as to raise the flkout end out of contact with the
part B for filling, for which purpose it is provided with
the cord G and winding-shaft H.
I represents the follower, having wires K projecting
through slots in the walls of the filling-chamber sup-
porting the pulleys L.
M represents the operating sweep, the shaft of whichis provided with a winding-sleeve, N, working loosely
thereon when not connected by the key O.
A cord, P, passes from the sleeve over the large
wheel Q, while other cords, R, arranged to be readily
attached to or disconnected from the ends of the shat
of the wheel P, pass around the pulleys L, and are
fastened to the frame at S.
T represents cross-bars for securing the doors of the
press in a closed condition, and
U represents a similar bar for holding the part B' of
the chamber in a closed position.
To operate my improved press, the pin 0 may be
pulled out to disconnect the sleeve N from the shaft
of the sweep A, and the cord P unwound therefrom,
to allow the follower to be moved back in the chamber
to the rear end, the cords R being then disconnected
from the shaft of the wheel Q" and the bar U removed.
The part B' may be turned up into'the position for
filling, which, being accomplished, and the part B' re-
turned to and secured in its originalpositio*, and the
cords R connected to the wioding-shaft, and also the
sleeve N secured to the shaft by the pin O, motion
may be communicated to the sweep, whereby the fol-
lower will be forced up to the part B, and the substance
pressed therein, when the doors E may be opened,
being provided with slots V, so as not to be obstructed
by the cords R, and the bales may be tied, the end
wall of the chamber and the face of the follower being
provided with grooves.for passing the cords or other
ties. The pressure of the follower may then be re-
laxed, and the bale discharged.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
Patent-
The combination of the fixed part B and the mov-
able tilting part B', the latter containing the follower
I, adapted to be tilted with it, and operated by the
winding-drum N, cord P, wheel Q, cords h, and the
wings K, working in the horizontal slots in the sides
of said part, as herein described, for the purpose speci-
fied.
