THE MERIDIAN TRIBUNE
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1948
Grand Jury Report
Following is the report of the
Grand Jury as submitted to the
Hon R. B. Cross, District Judge,
signed by J. Bruce Parks, fore-
man, and J. L. Fubian, secretary:
We, the Grand Jurors, for the
November 1948 term of the Dis-
trict Court of Bosque County re-
port as follows:
We have been in session three
days and have returned Four
True Bills of Indictment, all of
which are felonies. We have ex-
amined 20 witnesses.
As reflected by this report, the
condition of the County is good
with reference to the number of
violations. We attribute this to
a good citizenship, cooperation
by the public and to our active
law enforcement officials who
often prevent crimes from being
committed. In this connection
we recommend to the Commis-
sioners’ Court that we think it
would be a good policy for the
County to own and maintain an
automobile for the use of the
Sheriff’s Department, as well as
to own and maintain all necessary
radio and fingerprint equipment
for such Department. In this
way our officers in the future will
not make less money by being
active and furnishing modern up
to date service than they would
be being inactive. If crimes can
be prevented by constant alert-
ness and investigation, the cost
to the public will be less in the
long run. The Dam Construc-
tion will also bring additional
work for our officials in the fu-
ture.
We want to commend the De-
partment of Public Safety and
the Texas Rangers for their fine
services in matter which have
been before us. Without this ex-
pert help in several States, it
would have been impossible for
Bosque County to have done all
that needed doing to work out
serious violations.
We ask continued care and
caution on the highways. Since
the Grand Jury first asked for
this, our highways deaths have
decreased. All our efforts are

Old Theory Disapproved
In a statement on controlling
communicable diseases issued by
the Texas State Department of
Health, Dr. Geo. W. Cox, State
Health Officer states that if every
case of suspected communicable
disease were seen promptly by
the family physician and definite-
ly diagnosed, thousands of sus-
ceptible persons would be protect-
ed from these disabling diseases.
"The theory that it is a good
thing for children to have these
catching childhood diseases and
get them over with, has long
since been proven an error which
may actually endanger a child’s
life,” says Dr. Cox. “The longer
he can avoid having these dis-
eases, the better it is for him.
Every child should be protected
by immunization against all dis-
eases where an immunity can be
established.”
Prompt diagnosis, isolation and
good medical care give the patient
the best chance for a satisfactory
recovery without the serious com-
plications that sometimes accom-
pany even the milder forms of
communicable diseases. Dr. Cox
emphasized that obeying the
public health laws regarding isola-
tion and quarantine protects not
only the patient, but helps to
prevent the spread of the disease
to other persons.
“The State Health Depart-
ment,” Dr. Cox said, “does every-
thing within its power to protect
the health of the people of Texas,
but the cooperation of every in- j
dividual in protecting his own
health and that of his community
will do more than anything else
to successfully check the spread
of communicable diseases among
our people.”
