The busiest Department in
school these days is the English
one.
Every English student in school
wrote a Christmas story last
week, the most outstanding of
which to be selected to be read
on the Christmas Assembly pro-
gram Wednesday afternoon, Dec-
ember 22.
Last week began the study of
December's Reader's Digest. The
students are making notebook
outlines of the articles this week.
Three new books, "Bride of
Fortune," "Garner of Texas,"
and "Ride with Me," were pre-
sented to the high school library
by the local chapter of the Unit-
ed Daughters of the Confederacy
and Mrs. I. E. Lumpkin. The
student body wishes to express
sincere appreciation for
thoughtful gesture. With
such as this, our library is begin-
this
help
ning to progress.

Buddy Baxter, that demon bas-
ketball player from Meridian
High School, has done it again.
Buddy racked up 59 points for
the Phillips 66 team last night in
a thrilling game at Madison
Square Garden, bringing his total
points to 63 for the season, but
just give Buddy a chance after
all he has only played in 8 games
this season.
Arvey Swartout, who has long
been a protege of Eddy Cantor,
has been begun to look like the
old Eddie himself even to the ex-
tent of the ears.
Amelia Patterson, who finished
school in Meridian and got her a
job in an office in New York as a
typist, is now married and has
been to her sceret lover, Blanton

XMAS
A
and
HAPPY NEW YEAR.
A couple of dandy rains, Presi-
dental election over, prices lower
but steadying off on farm products,
all merchants in Meridian getting
in the fight, even ready-to-ware
sprouting sales during Xmas
week. Town full of people,
every body working, that wants
to. Local politics over and a
few changes taking places the
1st of year. About the only
thing, that can cloudy up the sky
for next year is inventory taking
and tax paying, including Income
Tax. So New 1949 looks like it
is going to be just OK.
I think you will remember
1948 for the high turkey prices
farmers received for their turkeys
on the ranch.
And the school kids and their
teachers will remember 1949 for
the opening of their new school.
Then there is the completion of
22 to Whitney. The building of
the bridge at Kimball Bend. The
Whitney dam and ‘tis said that
22 from Meridian to Hamilton
will be completed in 49.
The spuding in of oil well on
Turner Greenwade's ranch and
by the way this is one of the
most modern oil rigs and brand
new on this oil lease and it's a
honey, its test No. 2 for old
Bosque.
Our City streets are still a mess
but maybe a little better than
last year. Thanks to the State
highway Dept. Water dept, still
having lots of trouble with their
mains. Could be more cost to
Meridian citizens for water and
less profit to City under the new
set up.
—Our voluntary Fire Dept. do-
ing a great job and fire rates of
the best.
Every body should take their
hats off to Prof. Perry for better
than a greater job on anything
he tackles, especially the school
bldg.
Yes, take it all in all Meridian
has gained in 1948, but it sure
looked touch for a while.
We will be closed Xmas day
and possibly New Year's we hope.
It depends on our Merchants for
New Year's day.
Remember the gang and all of
us including little Bill the 3rd,
wish you the best for the holi-
days and New 1949.
If you see it in our merchants'
ads it's so.

BETTYLE LOU ERICKSON
SENDS XMAS GREETINGS
Mrs. Bettye Lou Erickson, who
has lived for more than two years
in an iron lung, having been
stricken with infantile paralysis,
sends the following Christmas
greeting to her friends in Me-
ridian and community:
"To All Our Friends:
"May you have the gladness
of Christmas,
Which is Hope.
The Spirit of Christmas
Which is Peace.
The Heart of Christmas
Which is Love."
—Bettye and Bettye Lou Erickson
Mrs. Bettye Lou and little
daughter, Bettye, who formerly
lived here with Mr. and Mrs. E.

in-law and her husband, is now

Miss Myrtice Nygaard Honored.
A tea and miscellaneous bridal
shower, honoring Miss Myrtice
Nygaard, of Denton, was given
Sunday afternoon, December 12,
from 2 to 4, in the Bernt Bert-
elson home at Cranfills Gap.
The honoree is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Nygaard, of
Meridian, and the bride-elect of
Curtis Larson, of McKinney.
When the guests arrived they
were greeted by Mrs. Bertelson,
who presented them to those in
the receiving line: Mrs. Lee Lar-
son of Clifton, Miss Myrtice Ny-
gaard, the honoree, Mrs. Otto Ny-
gaard and Mrs. Martin Olson.
Mrs. Olson is Myrtice's grand-
mother.
Miss Norene Nygaard of
Strawn, sister of the honoree,
was in charge of the registration.
In the dining room the lace-
covered table was centered with a
miniature bride and groom, plac-
ed upon a round reflector, en-
circled by red roses and lace
fern. Four tall white candles at
the windows lighted the room.
The guests were served delicious
fruit punch, “berlinger Krans,"
heart shaped cookies topped with
red sugar crystals, pecan halves,
and red and white mints.
Mrs. Emroy Pederson, of Wa-
co, presided at the punch bowl.
She was assisted by Margie Ped-
erson of Clifton. Mrs. Ed. Ped-
erson also assisted in serving.
Miss Avelyn Hoherts, of Den-
ton, a very intimate friend of the
honoree, and Mrs. Otto Anderson
and Mrs. P. O. Larson of Clifton,
were in charge of the many beau-
tiful and useful gifts. The gifts
were unwrapped and displayed in
the living room. Tall red candles
decorated the living room and re-
ception hall.
