(From The Jacket’s Jabber)
Meridian Complimented
In a recent issue of "Lions Roar"
the Cranfills Gap school paper, the
author of the writeup of the Mer-
idian-Cranfills Gap game had this
to say:
"Some of the veteran lettermen
have been heard saying that the
opponent in the Friday game was
one of the cleanest they have ever
played. The Meridian players,
coaches, and fans are to be comp-
limented on their fine display of
sportsmanship.".
This commendation by Cranfills
Gap makes us quite happy, and we
might add that it is always a
pleasure to meet Cranfills Gap
teams regardless of whether we
win or lose.
Today, when winning is so often
given so much importance, it might
be a good idea to think a little bit
about sportsmanship. Winning does
• not necessarily build character,
but sportsmanship does.
MHS, Take a Bow!
To the Meridian School Students:
May I take this privilege of ex-
pressing to you our appreciation
for your actions Halloween night
here in Meridian. We feel that
your conduct on this occasion was
most outstanding.
—R. D. Holt, Mayor
I want to express to the entire
Meridian School our thanks for
the way you conducted yourselves
at the Halloween Carnival and
after it was over. We feel that
you are to be commended for
your actions. It has been my
privilege to hear many compli-
mentary reports from the citizens
of our town and community.
Thanks to you for your coopera-
tive spirit.

Textbook Auditor Visits Meridian
The textbook auditor, a new
official provided for in the new
school laws, visited Meridian last
week to check on any surplus
books, and to determine how well
the books are being cared for.
The goal of the Department of
Education is to shift one million
books from places where they are
not being used to other schools
that are short of texts, and thus
avoid the necessity of buying new
ones.
The auditor commended the
excellent book room in Grade
School, and picked up about one
hundred surplus books.
Elementary Teachers Meet in
Meridian
The Bosque County Elementary
teachers met in the cafeteria of
the Meridian Grade School on
Thursday afternoon, November 9.
Mr. Curtis Evans, Principal of
Meridian Grade School, extended
a welcome to the visitors.
Miss Elsie Coston, County
Elementary School Supervisor, ex-
plained that the main theme of
the meeting was "Art in the
Grades." Following her remarks
she introduced Mrs. Earl White
who read a very interesting paper
on the subject and then discussed
some flower arrangements she had
made. The high light of the pro-
gram came when Mrs. White made
two arrangements. She stressed
using the wild flowers which grow
in abundance in Bosque County
and which are lovely either in a
fresh or dried state.
Smokey’s return "Quick lika da
duck."
Basketball Girls Elect Captains
The basketball girls elected
Joyce Nivin and Kathlyn Robinson
captains for the 1950-51 season
Wednesday afternoon, November
1. The team is confident that these
two Seniors will set a high example
for the rest of the team in the year
to come.
Coach Lee Erickson attended
the meeting of the girls’ coaches
of Bosque County, held in the
County Superintendent’s office at
4 o’clock on Thursday afternoon,
November 2.
Nothing definite was decided as
to whether the teams would be-
long to the Interscholastic League
or the High School Girls’ Basket-
ball League of Texas.
In addition to this problem, the
coaches voted on several other
matters, deciding that:
(1) Bonnie Birch, of Meridian,
will be eligible to play this season.
(2) The County Tournament
will be held in Kopperl during the
first and second weeks in Feb-
ruary.
(3) The Tournament will be
double-elimination. !

Injured Players Receive Gifts
Smokey Jorgenson, whose leg
was rather badly injured in the
Whitney football game October
27, was presented with a watch
and band by the faculty of the
entire school, the High School
students, and other friends, on
the morning of October 31. The
gift which was presented by co-
captains Don Roddy and Joe Wor-
ley, was a complete surprise to
Smokey, and he asked Joe and
Don to express his appreciation to
all the friends who helped buy
the watch.
The football team gave the
money to buy long-sleeved sport
shirts for Smokey and Clovis
Alexander, who was forced to go
back to the hospital after he had
injured his dislocated collar bone
again. The shirts were presented
by the co-captains Friday morning,
November 3.
Clovis’s injury was also suffered
in the Whitney game, and though
it was not necessary for him to
be confined to the hospital very
long, the injury was quite painful
for several days.
The entire school appreciates the
efforts put forth by these two
Juniors. Everyone is glad that
Clovis is back, and is rooting for

SAFE DRIVING CAN BE TAUGHT—And Texas has proved it.
Gov.. Allan Shivers receives from R. B. Cousins, Jr., center, of
Austin, a plaque awarded Texas for “meritorious accomplishment
in teaching safe driving to 40,000 high school students during the
1949-50 school year." Casualty Insurance Commissioner J. P. Gibbs
looks on at right. The award was the second in as many years to
be given Texas by the Association of Casualty and Surety Com-
Danies. Texas began teaching safe driving four years ago and now
offers the course in 432 of the state’s 1,450 high schools.
