SHE’S IN HALL OF FAME - Mrs. Idalia de Lise was recently inducted
into the Texas State Senior Games Hall of Fame, in light of her
consistent outstanding performances in Senior Olympic events over
the past two decades. While representing the Mercedes Amigos del
Valle chapter, Mrs. DeLise won some 283 medals, and has been a
vocal supporter of health and fitness for seniors. In addition to having
a City Proclamation issued in her honor, Mrs. DeLise was recognized
by top officials from the Amigos del Valle program at a recent
reception in her honor. She attributes her athletic participation to
her longevity - she’s now 90 years young - and says she’ll keep
playing for as long as she can.

Voting on
changes
to charter
underway
Early voting continues through
Friday in the November 6 special
election on 22 proposed amendments
to the City Charter.
Citizens can cast ballots between
8 a.m. and 5 p.m., through Friday, in
Mercedes City Hall.
The proposals are the
recommendations of a Charter Review
Committee appointed by the
commission. Roughly half of the
suggested changes are to clear up
grammar or spelling, to clarify
meanings, and to bring the Charter
into line with changes in state law,
explains City Manager Ernesto Silva.
Other proposals are more
significant. Among them:
— Elimination of term limits for the
mayor and city commissioners. As it
stands now, officials are allowed to
hold office for only three consecutive,
three-year terms. The amendment
would allow voters “to decide when
an officer holder has served too long,'
and will provide continuity in cases
where a city commissioner gains
suitable experience, and then wants
to hold the mayor’s post.
A portion of this proposed
amendment causing some
controversy is a clause that enacts it,
if passed, 30 after its approval by
voters, rather than the one-year
waiting period that is customary.
Opponents of the proposal point out
, that the change would allow present
STOCKSHOW COVERING ARENA - Work is
underway - in large scale - to cover the
rodeo arena on the grounds of the Rio
Grande Valley Livestock Show. The $830,000
project will see the bleachers and arena
covered - some 81,000 square feet in all.
Another two months of work is left on the
project, but it will only add to the value of a
rodeo that has just recently been named one
of the top three exhibitions in the state. The
project will also include concession stands
and restrooms, so that rodeo guests will no
longer have to leave the arena area during
the show. (Enterprise Photo.)

and tardiness, complaints of
headaches and stomachaches, and
discipline referrals have decreased,”
says Cynthia Cardenas, Child
