With the promise of fine weather |
for the weekend, the 63rd Annual Rio |
Grande Valley Livestock Show got |
underway Wednesday afternoon with
the traditional western parade
through downtown Mercedes.
In keeping with the Show’s 2002 /
theme, “A Blending of Cultures,”
Alvaro Garza Gonzalez, President of
the Cattlemen’s Association of |
Reynosa, and Eliseo Garza Doran,
President of the Cattlemen’s
Association of Matamoros, were
honored as Parade Marshals.
Over 110 entries were featured in
this year’s Parade, according to
Chairman Hector Martinez. There
were at least 13 different trail ride
groups, seven marching groups, 21
floats, beauty queens from all over |
the Valley, and other assorted entries.
Cash prizes of $500, $300, and $200
were awarded to competitive floats
that best carry out the theme of this
year’s parade. First and second place
trophies were to be given in the non-
competitive float class.
Leading off the Parade, which ran
1 up Texas Avenue north to the
I Showgrounds past a crowd of
- thousands, were mounted members
i Hidalgo County Sheriffs Posse from
| Edinburg.
The show continues through
Sunday, with more and better
attractions than ever before,
organizers say.
CHAMBER NAMES AWARD WINNERS - Winners of the Mercedes Area
Chamber of Commerce’s highest awards were revealed at Friday
night’s Annual Banquet. They include Bob Eilers, at right above,
winner of the “Lifetime Service Award,” shown accepting his plaque
from Chamber President Bob Price; Pete Guajardo, at left just below,
receiving his “Man of the Year” award from nominator Roy de Leon;
and in bottom photo, Janie Guajardo, being presented her “Woman
of the Year” plaque from Chamber Director Rudy Salinas. The
selection of Mr. and Mrs. Guajardo marked the first time ever that
a husband and wife had been selected the same year for those

Livestock Show officials were joined by Mercedes
area Chamber of Commerce and other local
dignitaries Saturday for a ribbon cutting marking the
formal opening of the show’s rodeo arena
remodeling project. The Livestock Show has spent
over $850,000 on a new 81,000 square foot all-
weather cover, adding two new sets of restrooms
and two new concession stands and rebuilding all
the livestock pens and chutes at the arena, as well.
The Stockshow’s preliminary events got underway
following the ceremony, with team penning and
Paint-A-Barrel contests taking place that afternoon.
The Cover Girl Revue took place that night. Past Show

The competition in the Borderfest
pageant consisted of a personal
interview, sportswear, and evening
gown categories.
Reyes, Amanda Martinez, Michelle
Garza, and Veronica Bustamante. Also
finishing first was a 1600-meter relay
team composed on Martinez, Alyssa
Trevino, Reyes and Garza.
Veronica Bustamante also placed
first in the 100-meter dash.
Finishing in second was Garza, in
the 400-meter dash.
A third place 800-meter relay
consisted of Sheila Shotwell, Alyssa
Trevino, Bustamante and Reyes.
Field events saw a first place finish
by Cathy Soto, in the shot put. Second
place honors went to Gaby Perez, in
the shot put and Alicia Ramirez in the
pole vault.
Soto placed fifth in the discus.
More track winners were Anita
Mendoza, third in the 800 meter run;
and Amanda Martinez, third in the 200
meter dash. Erica Escobar placed sixth
in the 1600 meter run.
Team members also performed well
- and took second place overall - at
the recent Bobcat Relays in Rio
Hondo.
