COLEMAN, May 9 (RNS)—In an
all Abilene finals Bob Rice trim-
med Bob Beaa. 4-3, here Sunday
afternoon to rack up the cham-
pions!* of the 1st Annual Cole-
man Invitation Golf Tournament.
Earlier in the day Rice took out
San Angelo’s Jay McIntosh-in a
semifinals match while Bean bast-
ad Coleman’s Charles Shepherd, 5-
4, to gain the finals.
Rice won the finals match on
the 16th hole, after making the
turn with a 2-up advantage over
his fellow townsman.
Abilene linksters also picked up
top awards in two of the four less-
er flights when Marlon Smith beat
John Gandy of San Angelo, 3-2,
for the third flight title and Benny

Enoa Slaughter in the first game
today, 7-4, and rallied to tie the
Philadelphia Athletics, 1-1, in Ebe

after nine innings.
Billy Pierce pitched the entire sec-
ond game, which was called be-
cause of darkness. Hoeft allowed

nals.
Milton Autry walked off with the
top prise for a Coleman player
when he bested Jimmy Scott of
Brownwood, 4-3, taking the blue
ribbon in the second flight.
First flight honors went to San
Angelo’s Robert Magness by whip-
ping Kenneth Edwards of Brown-
wood. 2-1.
Abilene made a clean sweep of
the championship flight honors
when Dick Stovall captured the
flight’s consolation award, tripping
Tommy Wolff of San Angelo, 1-up.
Fred White of Coleman won
first flight consolation honors. Pres-
ton Cochran of Lubbock took sec-
ond flight consolation honors, Bill
McHorse of Coleman won third
flight consolation honors, and Cross
Plains’ Mac Coppinger won fourth
night consolation honors.
White defeated Larry Brooks
of San Angelo, 2-1. Cochran best-
ed Sandy McSpaddin of Colorado
City, 6-4. McHorse nipped Henry
Hull of Brownwood, 1-up. Coppin-
ger slipped past Bill Daniels of
Coleman, 1-up.
In the championship flight, Rice
defeated Herb Gersbach of Brown-
wood, 4-3, in the first round, then
topped Kirk Newman of Fort
Worth, 3-2, in the quarterfinals.
Bean took out one of the tourney
favorites. Abilene’s Hardy Louder-
milk. 3-2, in the opening round,
then beat Winters’ Frank - Ford,
3-2, in the quarterfinals.

Big Spring Broncs were blanked
for the second straight time here
Sunday afternoon as John Single-
too buried the Carlsbad Potashers
to s 5-0 victory.
Mike Rainey pitched one of the
best games of the campaign for the
Broncs but his mates could not
rally behind him. The locals got
to Singleton for ten hits but he

Carlsbad scored first in the sec-
ond frame when Bob Hobbs scoot-

SWEETWATER, May 9 —
Odessa won only its third game in
U outings this season when a
Sweetwater rally fell four runs
short in the ninth inning here Sun-
day afternoon, 10-6.
Though giving up 11 bits. Wes
Ortix gained credit for the Odessa
victory. George McAllister, who
was shelled from the mound after
hurling only one-third of an inning,
was the loser.
In losing its first game since
getting a Longhorn League fran-
chise from Wichita Falls, the
Sweetwater crew sent three
moundsmen to the hill in the open-
ing frame.
The second chunker. Steve Nu-
nez, lasted only one-third of an
inning. The third looser. Bill Fals,
completed the final eight and one-
third frames, giving up only five
hits in the process, but the dam-
age hod been done
Odessa tallied seven runs in the
wild first, then coasted for the
win.
Shortstop Kid Gavilan and cen-
ter fielder Ken Cluley collected
two hits each to pace the Sweet-
water plate attack.
