Fair Park Area in 2d Year
turned to the location only last
year.
The center had its formal open-
ing two years ago with-the late
Harley Sadler as master of cere-
monies. 8
For housewives living in the
Fair Park vicinity, the bustling
little shopping center on South
Seventh St. is an ideal place to
“dash in" for a spool of thread
or a bottle of disinfectant.
But it’s also a good place for
leisurely shopping for a new dress
or the week’s groceries without
going to the trouble of dressing
up.
Now celebrating its second an-
niversary as an "incorporated"
center, the neighborhood business
section has 12 shops scattered
along a four-block area.
‘M’ System Pioneer
Pioneers in the district are the
“M” System, built in 1949, and
the H&B Variety Store, which
shares its building.
Henley Realty Co. has been lo-
cated on South Seventh St. for four
years now, and J. B. Scott’s Abi-
lene Radio and Television Sales
and Service for three.
Two years ago, George Shahan
opened his pharmacy in the area.

store. Scott has been in the busi-
ness for three years.
Soda Fountain, Too
Shahan’s semi-self-service drug
store stocks a full drug line. It
also has a soda fountain and ma-
gazine stand.
A resident of Abilene since 1920,
Shahan quit the drug business in
1950 for the cattle business but
the drought squelched that. Three |
other businesses are located in his |
building.
The dress shop is operated by
| Peggy Hawes and Mrs. Irene Cul-
well. They stock lingerie, dresses,
and other ladies’ ready-to-wear
items in the medium price range.
Grubbs has complete laundry
service as well as cleaning ser-
vice available to his customers.
His parents established the plant
on South Seventh St. 11 years ago,
but Grubbs later sold out and re-
