UVALDE, Tex., June it * —
"Cactus Jack" Garner’s going to
play host Sunday to anybody who
wants to drop in around 2 30 p.m.
and meet the national Democratic
chairman, Paul Butler.
You can bet hundreds will be
there-to see Garner as much as
Butler.
The former vice president hasn’t
left Uvalde, except to go out in the
brush hunting, since he came back
from Washingtin in 1940.
A spry M. Garner was in high
spirits today when he told pub-
lisher Harry Hornby Jr. of the
Uvalde News-Leader he wanted
everybody to come to his house
Sunday.

harmony among feuding factions of
the state party, had been scheduled
to have a quiet, private luncheon
with Garner Sunday.
Now, he and Garner are expect-
ed to stand on the porch of Garner's
home and shake hands as the
crowd files by. Butler will surely
say a few words, and probably
Garner will, too.
Chances are Garner will be all
dressed up in “the only suit I've
got. Paid $90 for it eight years
ago."
This will probably be the first
time Garner's appeared before
more than a handful of people at
one time since he left Washington
at the end of his second term as
vice president.
Since then, he's lived quietly—]
tending his pecan trees and feeding
his chickens—and held himself
aloof, in almost all instances, from
politics.
Butler spoke in Dallas last night,
at Tyler today and was to be in
Waco tonight.
In his Dallas speech, Butler at-
tacked what he called the "control-
led segment of the Texas press"'
and singled out the Dallas Morning
News. He said "that to put it
mildly the News is not dedicated
to disseminating the views of the
Democratic party."
The News reported Butler’s re-
marks in a front-page story, but
did not answer them directly in its
editorial columns. However, its
lead editorial today blasted Butler
by saying he was unable to under-
stand what was happening in Texas
politics.
It said most of the Democrats
who have voted against national
Democratic candidates in gather-
numbers since 1936, ". . . hope to
rescue the Democrats from the
nightmare of socialism and to re-
store it to states’ rights, free trade
and the individual integrity of free
enterprise."
