Westinghouse Offers $100
Holiday Loan le Strikers
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 16 on _
Westinghouse Electric Corp today
, offered to lend $100 cash to any
striking or furloughed employe of .
the firm who needs money to pro-
vide "the essentials for a decent
Christmas."
Production in 40 of the firm’s
biggest plants has been practically I
stalled by a strike of the AFL-CIO
International Union of Electrical
Workers and the independent
. United Electrical Workers.
The UE called the loan offer a
“nice gesture." The IUE said,
"They (the company) have offered
a bribe."
Neither union said specifically if
it wanted its members to accept
loans.
More than 50,000 workers are on
strike and another 40,000 employes
are furloughed or receiving only
part-time work. The company rays
the strikers alone are losing
$950,000 a day in wages.
A furloughed worker — or striker
—must have lost 30 days consecu-
tive work to qualify for the loan.
The big electric appliance firm
did not comment on its own losses
but other sources estimate produc-
tion losses alone have passed 150
million dollars to date. That does
not include maintenance costs.
Westinghouse also said it is un-
able to supply all of the home
appliances that could be sold in
the final weeks of the Christmas
shopping season. Early supplies
were pulled out of warehouses.
- Both unions took a dim view of
the loan offer. UE said it would
be better if a settlement were
made. The IUE said, “It would be
more in keeping with the Christ-
mas spirit if Westinghouse were to
sit down and bargain in good
faith."
Both unions were pressing for
wage increases under reopening
clauses in present contracts. The
company has offered a five-year
pact which it said contains a total
minimum wage increase of 2344
cents an hour.

Thurmond Attacks
U.S. Supreme Court
For Desegregation
FLORENCE, S. C., Dec. IS I* -
Sen. Thurmond (D-SC), the 1948
States Rights Democratic can-
didate for president, says he is
ready to vote to impeach every
member of the U. S. Supreme
Court.
Addressing the prosegregation
Citizens Councils of Florence Coun-
ty Jasti night. Thurmond attacked
the court for its ruling that racially
segregated public schools are un-
constitutional.
A member of the audience, P.M.
Norton of Florence, asked Thur-
mond:
"Is there any place in the Con-
stitution giving the people them
selves a way to impeach the Su-
preme Court?"
“No,” Thurmond replied. He ex-
plained that only Congress can im-
peach.
"But," he shouted, “I’m ready
tomorrow to vote to impeach every
one of them.” He asserted that the
antisegregation . ruling was not
based on law but on "sociological
and psychological grounds ”
Noting that there are both
Democrats and Republicans on the
court, Thurmond said he has had
"enough of all of them."
