Saarlanders
Vote Today
SAARBRUECKEN, Saar, Dec 17
(—Saarlanders vote tomorrow for
the third time in this century to
confirm that they are Germans.
The 670,000 voters in this long
disputed border territory elect
a new Parliament. But the real
issue is whether they want to re-
join their German fatherland from
which they were separated by the
defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945
The three back-to-Germany par
ties that smashed the French-Ger
man plan to “Europeanize" this
German-speaking territory in the
Det 23 plebiscite confidently pre-
dict they will win.
This would mark the second de
cisive step this year toward an
anschluss (union) of the Saar with
Germany. The first came with the
resounding defeat of the project
to make the Sarr a Europeanized
state. This was an implied vote
for union with Germany.
In the 1935 plebiscite, 477,109
Saarlanders voted for union with
Nazi Germany, 46,513 for continu
ing under the League of Nations,
and 4,124 for incorporation in
• France.
The pro-German parties are
shooting for 75 per cent control of
the new 50-member Parliament
This majority is necessary to
change the constitution that under
lines the territory’s political sep coal
aration from Germany.
French and West German states
men already have arranged new
negotiations on the future of the
Saar based on the belief that the
new government will be over-
whelmingly in favor of union with
Germany.
Negotiation# with the United
States, Britain and France, will
be necessary to make the Saar
a part of Germany, legal experts
here say. The Paris treaties that
gave West Germany sovereignty,
give the Western Big Three th.
final say on all questions affecting
German unification.
